How to enable power, sleep & wake buttons on keyboard?

Searched in vain for this:

How does one enable the power, sleep and wake buttons on a keyboard? Just got a Wintek keyboard that has these three extra keys, but they are non-responsive.

Erm, BIOS?

Does the keyboad come with a driver (on CD)? Guess you need to install that.

What’s BIOS? Sorry, I’m not tech proficient.

Basic Input-Output System. You can enter it immediately after your PC starts, there is a key stroke (or combination of keys) required before Windows starts booting. Sometimes the key(s) is (are) shown on the screen, but if you don’t know what you are doing you probably shouldn’t touch it.

I don’t think tech support gave me one. I’ll ask, thanks!

You don’t need the bios. If your keyboard has non-standard keys, you need a keyboard specific driver. You can get this either from the CD coming with the keyboard or from the homepage of the manufacturer.

Thanks Shiner – I tried to find a website for the mfr but couldn’t; I guess I need to know the Chinese name of Wintek before I can Google for its website. Anyone know it?

Actually I’m sort of guessing with the BIOS thing, but nevertheless I wouldn’t call those non-standard keys. They’ve been around for years. Also, my mother-in-law has a keyboard with them (which cost about 200 nt$, btw) and no CD came with it. The power keys work fine. In fact, they’re a pain in the arse, cos it’s very easy to accidentally switch your computer off.
Now my memory’s a bit bad on this, so I can’t remember if I fixed this problem (in my case it would be switching that feature OFF), but if I did, it was in the BIOS (my memory really is very shite though).

Tech says it’s done via BIOS. Maybe I’ll try fiddling with it and kill my computer. Or maybe I’ll take Irishstu’s advice and NOT enable those keys to avoid accidental powerdowns.

Did you try www.winteknet.com.tw ?

Google “Wintek Keyboard” does the trick…

Nice find Shiner.

I’m sure you could have also found third party keyboard drivers that lets you program the keys. If your keyboard allows that of course.

It’s also alot trickier to do it through BIOS as not every BIOS supports these functions through keyboard.

I physically removed the Power and Sleep keys from my keyboard at work. Few things are more distressing than watching your computer shut down instantaneously in the middle of working on an important project after you accidentally hit one of these keys.

Well, I just discovered how to enable two of the keys (power and sleep). While trying to solve Dragonbabe’s complaint about her computer sleeping too quickly when idle, I was in the Control Panel’s Power Options, under the Advanced tab, there are options for what should happen when you press the power or standby buttons on your computer, so you can choose between ‘do nothing’ (disabling the key), powering down, going to standby, etc… There was no control for the ‘Wake’ Button though, which is what I really wanted – to have the computer wake up at the touch of any key or the mouse, rather than having to reach down to the out of the way main CPU case.

So you don’t need to remove the keys if you want to disable them.

Got a new system today, and now the computer won’t stand by. I tried enabling standby for the ‘sleep’ and ‘power’ buttons via the power management in the control panel but there was no reaction. I tried going to the Start menu for the manual standby and there was STILL no reaction. What gives? :noway:

What model is it? Has it ever slept? I think some device driver is blocking the transition to S3 mode. Most likely it’s not essential so you could disable it. Try some tests like seeing if it sleeps in safe mode where most stuff is disabled, and if it sleeps with no non essential hardware connected. Google “ sleep mode” and “ sleep mode”

Thanks, KingZog. I ended up trying to shut if off last night, and when I got up in the morning the Windows is Shutting Down screen was still up, so I did a hard reboot, and now the sleep and wake functions are working fine. :idunno: Computers! Aaaaaargh!

I wish I’d thought of saying “haveyoutriedtoreboot” first.
