I’ve just spent 1.5hrs googling this and I’m unsure what to do. Do you know the best program to use to jailbreak 4.1 on iphone 4? According to wikipedia, there is an untethered jailbreak available. Two, in fact. Which is best, and please, I need a tutorial, in writing, if possible. (Having difficulties accessing YouTube for tutorials from Malaysia.)

I used limera1n on mine about 4 months ago on 4.1 and have kept it like that. I have a pretty crap memory, but it was extremely simple to do. Haven’t had any problems with it.
On this note, I will be moving to Taiwan next month and I currently have an Iphone 3GS. Will jailbreaking it the way you did allow me to use my current Iphone on a taiwan cell carrier’s plan without issues? Thanks so much for your help!
If you have a carrier locked 3gs, you need to “unlock” it to use it here. Make a note of the firmware version and take it to a shady corner shop and ask them if they can unlock it.
RobinTaiwan limera1n.com for 4.1 on a factory unlocked iPhone 4. It’s exactly what I’m running.
freethinker83, you will need to jailbreak and then unlock. go to blog.iphone-dev.org/ or for easier instructions, google “unlock 3gs 4.[yourOSversion] site:redmondpie.com”. depending on your current firmware, you may end up with a tethered jailbreak, which basically means don’t let the phone run out of batteries or run stuff that makes it crash with any regularity. if it resets at any time, you’ll have to re-jailbreak it with a laptop to use the phone again. in this “jailbroken but reset without tether” state most of the programs will still work on WiFi, however with the notable exception of the browser.
why pay a shady corner shop for this free software when you can do all this in the shade of your own home or office?

The Limerain link you posted, is it the beta version? I read that there is a limerain Rc1b or something like that. It’s supposed to address some issues the beta version had. Do you have info/opinion about this?

Successful jailbreak with limera1n, here. It was fast and easy. I did it at an internet cafe in Malaysia and the clerk didn’t even charge me anything because I was on the computer for about 2 minutes only.

The old iPhone is now updated to the latest firmware, jailbroken and ready to go to a new home. If the buyer doesn’t want it jailbroken, it will take 10 minutes to restore it.

I have no issues with speed or battery life but I have some small problems. I posted about it in this thread.
Another problem I haven’t mentioned, sometimes I can’t sent text messages. Tap the send button but nothing happens. I have to respring or restart the phone and it works again but I have to retype what I was trying to send. I think I might restore mine soon and jailbreak it again. YMMV.

No problems here although I only jailbreak now really to get DisplayOut, Screensplitter and Photo Albums, so my configuration is pretty mild.
I do know friends who have gone off the deep end in terms of mods on the shell, etc, that are definitely taxing the phone more than a stock configuration would. A jailbreak opens up your phone to almost anything you want to do, but as long as don’t go nuts, it should be fine.

My only real motivation for a jailbreak is to be able to use other network operators while outside of Taiwan, hence i will definately be cutting up a 7/11 sim card tonight to check if it works!
I used redsn0w last night to jailbreak my iphone.
This tutorial was helpful but a tad incomplete. There were some extra steps and catches that weren’t mentioned.
First I updated my iPhone to 4.3.3, followed the directions and downloaded the restore file.
My Internet Explorer browser automatically renamed the .ipsw file to a .zip extension. Just rename and continue with the tutorial.
After installing Cydia you need to rerun the jailbreak and install the iPad baseband. Attempting to check both options will crash the application (on windows at least).
After running jailbreak, Cyndia, and iPad baseband you need to run the Cyndia app and search for ultrasnow (ultrasn0w?) this is the app that actually unlocks your phone. I’ve used mine several times today with sim card. I’m receiving/making calls and messages just fine.

I understand that upgrading to the iPad baseband is the only (for now) way to unlock, but don’t you lose your GPS function? Another thing is that you’ll never be able to get your iPhone baseband back again…
