how to make new friends? I consider myself not young anymore, young crowds scare me away cause they are too noisy. I’m a quiet type sometimes…alway do things and go anywhere alone…sometimes it’s quite boring to live a life like this…
Move to Taitung and hang out with the foreign surfers. Live like there is no tomorrow. Learn to parasail there. Grow your own. Live by the sea and have lots of parties.
yadiyada, right!
Do a language exchange, go to a Forumosa happy hour, hang out at Alleycat’s?

language exchange–> have done that.
Happy hour from Forumosa → too scared to be there alone, as I’ve been to Happy hour from the Oriented…not very useful I think. People from the Oriented…just…don’t like them too much…too many ABCs…and business oriented people…what’s the catch?
The Forumosa happy hours are different, we don’t wear ties, and don’t give out name cards, we are just normal people having a friendly evening out, no business what so ever. But I do understand how you feel Erica. Even a Forumosa Happy Hour can be daunting the first time. So I suggest you hang around here, post a bit, get to know other posters, and people will we wanting to meet you.
Really?
I feel that I’ve been contributing a lot of posts here…
I’m sure that the happy hour from Forumosa is different from the one from the Oriented. But people can be protective of themselves most of the times…since some of them might be harassed badly before…and it takes time to know people…
I’m just dying for some changes…I don’t want to live a life like this and still think about it when I turn to 40…that’s really sad.
Another thing is I am afraid to go any event myself because I’m not a social person, neither do I know how to start a conversation…that just scare the hell out of me!!!
Erica, I’ve never been to a forumosa gathering. If you wanna go to the next one, I’ll go with you! PM me if you wanna try that!
Sounds like a good idea. Sure!

Erica, well your chance is just around the corner, the next forumosa happy hour is Tuesday July 6th at Carnegies starting from approx 8pm, though i imagine there will be some early birds.
At my first happy hour this dude came up to me and gave me a business card that proclaimed him to be ‘Maoman’ of ‘Forumosa’. Then he let me play with his dog.
Erica, don’t worry about being crap in real life with real people. Most of us are forumosans because we have no social skills at all. Come join the party.

The Basher would wear a tie, but his mommy is too far away to tie it for him. He tried clip-ons, but pony-tails are not the same thing.
How do I know this…he gave me his business card at a Happy Hour. The same one I rolled over Maoman’s dog’s leg.
Erica, be careful. These are people you have met in cyberspace. If you do go, please beware the following people;
Richardm: No sense of humour
Stragbasher: Only claims to know where his towel is.
Fuzzy: Just plain mean.
Gus: Never met anyone so self-centered in my life.
Tigerman: All of the above.
They all drink far too much and some are even suspected to be hippies, yippies and/or flippies.
Ohh…Maoman’s cool. ![]()
Erica… are you a local, or are you from overseas?
Because, if you are local… there’s probably a tongshui trying to reach you on your cellphone to let you know that the next elementary school, Jr. High, High, Uni, or Buxhiban hui is coming up this weekend, and that you just HAVE TO attend.
If you are a foreigner… oh, come on! Taiwan offers a rich social life for expats. If not, why would so many people stay for so long? Just get out and mix things up a bit. The cool thing about expat Taiwan is that there are people working here, that have all kids of interests outside of their careers. There are expats who are into photography, flim, music, the great outdoors, martial arts, trail running and trail hiking, religion, hi-tech stuff, computers, Tango and Salsa dancing, great beer, etc… There are heaps of places to go during the day and at night to enjoy LIFE with like minded people.
I don’t think it’s hard at all to hook up with new friends in Taiwan. Just hang out a bit. It’s not as if it’s a mystery where people go in there free time, plus you have this website, which is a great community resource.
That was Maoman. He came here from Canada by airplane, but I think his dog is imported from somewhere else . . . .

I guess you can take a guess of where I’m from originally. If I’m a foreigner, would I post a thread like this here? ![]()
Erica, I’m planning to be at the next happy hour too… it will be my first. I want to be sure some of the Forumosa ladies will be there.
Really? That will be interesting. ![]()
One great way to make new friends is to have sex with somebody. They will then introduce you to all their friends and perhaps, family members, who will provide you with hours of fun and companionship until you stop having sex with the first somebody.
Well, that will be a fast way to get to know somebody. But, thanks. I need to know people through a normal way. ![]()

Well, I think you’ve started a nice convo here
What sort of companionship you looking for?
Starting a conversation: “Hi, My name is Erica1973…” tends to work sorta well ![]()
it does help to have a friend here who can help introduce his/her network of friends to you. I have been very fortunate there … If you’re not a conversation type (seems you post pretty well!), then maybe an activities partner(s) may be a good way to go?
