How to negotiate TEFL Teaching Salary in Taiwan?

Or because Taiwan is allowed to be blatantly racist in their hiring practices.

Oh wait, the US has been hiring Filipinos for crap wages in school districts that don’t want to pay living wages to local teachers with years of experience for years.

But actually, I disagree about who the “newer salary” applies to. The reality is that salaries here tend to suck. There are plenty of people (white men from English speaking countries that are married to Taiwanese women) with no teaching experience making 80k/month at fake international schools. The reality is that qualifications don’t really push that salary much above 100k though. And if you’re at school making 100k+, you can bet the parents are going to be some of the most insanely entitled pieces of poop you’ve ever encountered, with an admin that happily takes their side 100% of the time.

All the South Africans I know are white men married to Taiwanese women.

EDIT: I know a white South African woman who was married to a Taiwanese guy.

Happens in countries like Dubai and even Australia too!! Doctors and engineers from richer countries get paid triple that of poorer countries. South Africa (despite them being white) are often included in that. Many companies in both China and Taiwan will offer them a lower salary. Not racism per se. It’s more just giving them a salary they are happy with. -they will pay as low as you will allow.

Really depends on the school. I know many where licensed teachers are on well over 130k but… I also know some that have stupidly low “salary caps” of 90,000 a month (regardless of additional teaching hours)

Although if you want more… a friend of mine just moved to Hong Kong a few months ago and is now on 72,000HKD a month at a public school.

There’s hardly anything to play for, income wise, teaching in Taiwan. However, white people from English speaking countries have a big advantage. Younger people have an advantage when teaching young learners. Young women have a greater advantage.

It’s not fair, but it is.

There are a lot more foreigners in Taipei. The scholarships through Taipei universities are much more competitive.

Just be aware that it is illegal to work in any job or place other than the one on your work permit if you have a work permit from an employer. Hundreds of professionals in Taipei get in trouble over this every year. Most are English teachers moonlighting in one way or another. The consequences for getting caught are devastating and you can’t controll whether you get caught.

That said, plenty of people seem to get away with it. YMMV.

Who said I needed a work permit?

It was just an example that high paying work is easy to find which is the topic of this post. Not work permit requirements

Lol he had jfrv being married to ROC citizen does have advantages .

You may not, but OP probably does.

You know what they say when you assume…

Also work permits are not the topic of this post.

The title is “How to negotiate TEFL Teaching Salary in Taiwan?”

The OP hasn’t indicated either way whether he needs a work permit or not and that is none of our business and up to the OP to bring up.

My response was on topic and I don’t appreciate being accused of breaking the law.

Please stay on topic.

Ok boss.

I just want to add that I am also a Taiwanese
