How to release "on-hold" PMs (erm, yeah, what?)

I don’t understand this. I have been deleting my old PMs one by one to “make room” like the message says…but noop, nothing. I still don’t get the ones “on hold.”

Oh and is there a way I can delete ALL my old PMs at once without having to click them individually?

on each page of pms there’s a “mark all” link.

once you delete dome there’s a link at top you have to click, it says “release on hold messages” or something.
