How would you translate these terms?

武狀元 wu zhuang yuan
文狀元 wen zhuang yuan

As far as I know, in imperial times there were two top government positions for scholars and soldiers, hence the wenzhuangyuan, and wuzhuangyuan.

Any ideas of an equivalent English term, or someplace I could find good reference materials?
