HSBC Premier / Standard Chartered / Fidelity

Does anyone have any opinions to share on HSBC Premier in Taiwan? Do they offer any useful support or do they just try to sell you life insurance?

And what’s the deal with Standard Chartered? I see they have “Personal”, “Preferred” and “Priority” banking but I have no idea what the difference is supposed to be.

Finally, how about Fidelity Taiwan, anybody using them? I called up with some basic queries and they did not seem very helpful.

A poor start, perhaps, but from a HK perspective, HSBC service completely sucks, but they are the only real option about. They also know that, and thus the shitty service.

I always stayed clear of HSBC after some really shitty service in the UK and US, but that was 10 years ago. I don’t have anything particularly bad to say about Citibank but saying they are less shit than everyone else is not exactly a glowing report.

I only use HSBC as necessary for 2 things:

  1. connects to HSBC US account for easier wires

  2. they have a 5% discount card on a supermarket I shop at.

Otherwise, avoid (although the prevalence of ATM network is a plus for some)

I use Standard Chartered. Automatically bumped up to their “Premium” using direct deposit (same “highest” consumer ex Private Banking level as HSBC “Premier”, which biggest benefit is a 1% cashback credit card… pretty rare in HK)

Well I don’t have a foreign HSBC account and I prefer Citibank’s airline partner cards.

Charter just makes things confusing with their terminology, it seems like ‘Priority Banking’ is private banking while ‘Preferred Banking’ is similar to Citigold, e.g. more or less the same service except they now try and hawk insurance at you.
