I just got charged NT$500 for disrespecting my ARC

You cows … who carries a wallet? I’ve been wallet free for 10 or more years now and I’m still going strong … been to the WA (wallet anonymous) for some time and we agree on one thing … just put all the important stuff in your pockets … for a few good reasons.

Your wallet can’t be pick-pocketed
You never forget your wallet
You can’t lose your wallet
People can not go trough your wallet and find ‘privat’ stuff
You don’t need to clip your ARC and get a fine
Animals don’t need to suffer for their hides, planet resources don’t need to be used for faked leathers or nylon, polyester.
Your buttocks don’t look like it’s going to be blown out
Sitting is more comfortable without a wallet in your back pocket
You’ll carry less rubbish … aka VIP cards, etc…

One drawback … all your stuff could go in the laundry …

A few weeks ago I went in to get a new ARC. The guy looked at the old one, which was a bit shabby around the edges, and told me that I have to keep it in the plastic sleeve the provide, in order to keep it in pristine condition.

I pointed out that it wouldn’t fit in my wallet that way. He told me I still have to keep it in the sleeve.

I told him that was unreasonable, and politely refused.

He still issued me the new one. :stuck_out_tongue:

trim it with those kids serrated edge scissors this time.

if Taiwan started making too much sense it could end up way too much like the country you left in the first place and cause you to think why you left?? Does that make any sense???

I cut mine in half. One piece goes in my wallet (easily) in case I need to show it to someone. The other stays at home in case I lose my wallet.

I do the same with my money.

Gotta agree with TC on this one.
400 hits in 6 hours. Not bad for a waste of bandwidth.

Isn’t it the same with passports and money? They both remain the property of the state?

Lucky they didn’t do you for treason.

Appeal the fine. Yanking the wankers is a great hobby.
First, demand to see the statute. Second, if the statute actually exists (which is doubtful)
make the argument that you absolutely were not disrespecting the ARC. You were actually respecting the ARC by putting it into a safe and secure area in your Taiwan purchased wallet. You destroyed none of the information and simply made the card more useable to you and the officials who need to see it. Something that Taiwan has so far been unable to do and actually, you would like to see some official recognition thanking you for this great idea.

Um, I didn’t agree with that point he made at all. But rather that the document is government property and you are not allowed to alter or damage ID anywhere in the world.

Laundry? not OK?

Aren’t we supposed to be getting IC enabled ARCs soon? I’d imagine they’d be credit card sized, wouldn’t they?
Apparently, the govt will grant my extension, but I’ve been ordered to pay NT$500 as a penalty for disrespecting their (not my) card. :no-no:

To be honest, I have every intention of doing the same thing all over again, if necessary, so I can fit the card in my wallet.
Yes, we’ve had the same thing with people cutting their passports to fit their gear. Remember although you carry your ARC it doesnt belong to you. The same as your passport.
Not mentionning that we are “Aliens” which was the best thing ever I was called.
Does any knows why they use the term "alien’ anyway and not “foreigner”
They pretend to be our “brothers” always (especially when the drinking starts)
Strange country indeed…
Because they followed the USA their practices. All non US citizens in the USA are aliens

No, trust me from experience. That was ARC card #3. And it was the one that had the nice picture on it from my 24th birthday too. I still hold on to it for posterity. The one I have now is the oldest one I own. It’s almost completely filled in on the back, especially since I’ve had three legal employers in the last six months (and not to mention the numerous illegal ones that I had at one point or another since then) and three renewals. Thank goodness it’s my last year here. I’d hate to see how horrible my next ID photo would be. Maybe I could use my baby picture instead…

WHAT plastic sleeve? I don’t remember getting one of them with my ARC.

When I was working in Denmark, I always recall the ‘fun’ experience of going to the Danish Immigration Office to renew my work permit. The department is called ‘Udlændingestyrelsen’ and foreigners are called ‘Udlændinge’. I think the direct translation of ‘Udlændinge’ is outlanders (do correct me if I’m wrong). Try saying ‘Udlændingestyrelsen’! Quite a tongue twister for me! I just thought that it was ironic that the immigration deparment had an extremely long and difficult to pronounce name. Maybe it’s just the Danes’ way of keeping foreigners away!

I’m not trying to piss off the Danish posters here on Forumosa, but by sharing my experiences there is just to point out that the vast majority of government related agencies are:

 1. bureacratic organisations who are never people friendly
 2. have rules & regulations that never makes any sense at all
 3. and this is true whether we are in Taiwan or Turkmenistan

The new ARC card has an IC chip with the size of a giant billboard so the authorities can spot you a hundred miles away. If you can’t fit a giant billboard into your pocket, go get a bigger pocket. Can’t find a bigger pocket, that is your problem. Or you can always move to Christmas island.
