Hey, I’ve been having some issues with my school recently and my ARC expires in 3 months.
My manager told me my contract is going to be extended and I need to hand in my passport and ARC.
For the past few weeks, the managers at the school have been unusually awkward around me and only on Friday I was unenthusiastically told to hand in this information.
I have a text message of me asking if my contract has been extended and both manager’s said yes, but there’s something really odd about their behaviour and in the past few weeks, 2 Taiwanese teachers have gone too.
How do I know if my school is trying to be sneaky and cancel my ARC behind my back?bwhat are my options?
I did, I asked if my contract is going to be extended for sure, and they both said yes. But there’s something really suspicious about the whole thing and the way they’re acting.
They just told me to bring in my passport and ARC ASAP
It is normal to need to show passport and hand in old arc at immigration. But just ask to go with them to immigration. If they are being honest they will have no problem you going along. Use the excuse you want to learn how to get to the immigration department as you don’t know where it is located. Or some other vague excuse.
Or just tell them you want to handle to renewal of your arc. That’s what I do. It’s only $1000 to renew. Some schools will charge teachers $10,000 for it. Which is criminal.
Thanks for the answers. I just have the feeling I’m going to wake up with a letter telling me I have 7 days to leave the country which isn’t so great for a pandemic and quite literally nowhere else to go.
If your school does cancel your employment before the contract end date, they need to issue immigration a termination of contract letter and when I left a place mid contract I had to sign it.
But no matter, if this happens immigration has a 6 month open ARC to extend your ARC while you look for a new job. You can’t work on it but it allows you to stay.
Did you sign on a new extended contract? They don’t need your passport etc. to extend your contract. They need those documents to extend your work permit with the new extended contract.
Ah wow, I wasn’t aware of this. I read so much on this forum that i’d have 7 days to leave the country. Also if I wanted to get a new job, i’d have to leave Taiwan and come back again.
You have to go to immigration and ask them to change the status. You don’t need to leave which is nice. But they will only do it if your boss or you terminates the contract and you need a signed paper saying so to provide immigration before they change your status.
