If the president's son-in-law chews gum in a Singapore court

i just read that president chen’s son-in-law p*ssed off the judge(s) by openly chewing gum
during his trial.

it got me thinking… what if he had done it in a courtroom in Singapore? Seriously, what would
a Singaporean judge do if he/she sees someone chewing gum in the courtroom?

Corporal punishment using a cane is not that bad of an idea here.

You can chew gum in Singapore. You can’t sell gum in Singapore.

I’m sure that there would be a national outcry calling for the president to step down.

Actually Chewing Gum has been legalised in Singapore now. you can buy, sell, chew, import, whatever.

Back to the original point, I’m not sure the judge should have made a big deal out of it (depends on how vigorously he was chewing), but it does confirm what an idiot the son-in-law is. Court is a solemn and serious environment and one should show basic courtesy and respect for the judge, especially if one is appearing there as a criminal defendant. Chewing gum in court is definitely casual, disrespectful and inappropriate in that setting. If I was his lawyer, I’d smack him up side the head for his stupidity.

I’m sure his wife already did that one already.

If you can’t chew gum in your own daddy’s courtroom what can you do?

This guy must be either so confident in his connection that he just doesn’t give a damn about getting caught or flirting with a contempt of court charge, or just really really stupid. I hope for the sake of Taiwan’s hospital patients that it’s the former. This guy is supposed to be a DOCTOR!!!

Well the next day the son in law decides to pick his nose, pick his ear and flick sleep out of his eye while in court…

This guy is a keeper.

Hopes he saves the farting for the last day in court.

I’m betting he plays GameBoy on the last day of his trial.

This aspect of the courts shits me no end. I understand what you are saying MT, but as someone iwho is hopefully only ever likely to appear in a court on the very odd occasion, hopefully never again, the prospects of being penalised for not knowing the archaic protocol disgusts me.

In my one and thus far only trip to a courthouse I flashed a nervous grin when my name was called to face a drink driving charge. The pig of a beak threatened me with a one year jail term and advised me to return the following week with a lawyer and a better attitude. Contempt of court? Absolutely!

Sorry, I believe he will flirt or make out with the female bailiffs in the court. :noway:
