iHerb - tariff?

I have received in Taiwan 2 orders from iHerb.

For the first I used the DHL service. I noticed that the package label did not provide a list of contents, nor did it disclose their value. Then I had just ordered some pancake mix and Prelief (an antacid that’s classed as a nutritional supplement) The total value was 43.26 USD

For the second I used general international airmail. This time the label did list the items I was receiving along with their value.

The iHerb website indicates that based on customer feedback, an import tariff may be applied to purchases of 50 USD or greater (including shipping fees)

Is this true about import tariff? And is using DHL a way around this?

This page seems to contain quite a lot of information, sometimes in language that I don’t understand.

I’m not implying the information is useless in answering my questions, but where are the answers?

Why was there no customs declaration stuck to the DHL shipment, but there was one for the shipment by regular mail? (their monetary values were similar)

iHerb Info: best-online-supplement-store.blogspot.com/

I received my first order from iHerb back in October. DHL called me when it arrived in Taiwan informing me that it had been stopped at customs because it contained pills (vitamins), and I had to pay an import tariff. IHerb had included a list of contents, but without values. DHL requested I provide that info along with a copy of my passport. I then got slapped with a tariff over $NT2,000. I wasn’t happy about it, and asked DHL what the deal was. They said that any shipment under $NT3,000 is excluded from a tariff. We’ll see if that happens…

December 2013: iHerb no longer ships to Taiwan.

I cannot find an online vitamin company that ships to Taiwan.

I am a professional nutritionist who strongly believes in the power of vitamins and herbs for health and healing. I have tried to find someone to start a vitamin company with me here in Taiwan, and have not yet found anyone.

Are you sure? I just made a new order 4 days ago, shipped to Taiwan and it was fine.

Also just checked shopping cart, and “Taiwan” is still in the drop down menu of countries ($8DHL, $4 airmail).

There is a warning when you choose Taiwan, underneath country - “Orders over $50 (or NT $3000) may be subject to tariff from 30% to 50% of the total price of the order.”. 3000NTD is actually 100USD, so keep under 100USD, split into multiple shipments if you need more, and you’ll be fine no tax. Also remember to use code MFK646 for $10 off your first order.
