Hi, not actually in Taiwan yet but will be soon. doing english camp for 10 days, blah blah. anyway, arranged another one for a week after that in Zhejiang, Hangzhou, thinking that oh its only 400 miles away i’ll have a nice little boat and train/bus ride there over a week or so. now just bloody found out that there is no godamn direct transport between taiwan and china. what do you lovely people do to get there? also, visa thing - i don’t believe this… i’m in cambodia working now - there is a chinese embassy so i’ll ask there. hope someone can help. i hate flying…boats are good though. mandi (UK) xxxxxx
This is your only viable option: Taiwan > Hong Kong > China. And yes, you must get airborne.
A lot of business people based in Taiwan do Taipei --> Macao --> China. The issuing if visas is faster in Macao, so if you time it right it is actually much faster than going through HK.
There is also a lot of Taiwan/Mainland traffic going through Okinawa lately as well.

I recommend coming here via Macao. Heaps of flights to Taipei every day. However, if you really want to take a ship here, then fly to Okinawa and take a ship from there. Don’t know the frequency of this passenger maritime route though.
Do not, on any account, try getting a China visa from Taiwan. Your passport is simply sent to Hong Kong for processing, at exorbitant cost, and it takes anything up to 10 working days.
If you were in HK you could just get it done within one working day for much less money, and it would be even cheaper if you take the traditional three working days option.
I think there’s a thread here about getting the visa straight at the airport, but I could be wrong.
Here’s the link to the China visa thread: http://forumosa.com/3/viewtopic.php?t=13027
You’ll find all the information there including the info that getting a visa here in Taiwan is not the worst solution because it takes about 5 working days and costs about half of what it costs when you get it in Hong Kong at the airport (I’ve done both or rather all three things including doing a stop-over in Hong Kong and getting the visa there).
