Inexpensive hotels in Taipei

I’ll be arriving in Taipei in August and will need to stay in a hotel for a while if I don’t prearrange a job.

Is it possible to find a fairly clean room somewhere for $25 a night?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Yes, and the bed will be round, there will be mirrors on the ceiling and walls, and you will be offered companionship in the middle of the night.

Seriously, at $25 a night you are talking skanky Love Hotel, in Taipei. You’ll need to look around a bit to find one, at that price, that you’ll want to spend more than a couple of hours in.

A single room in one of the hostels is also a way to go - there you will have people who can tip you off on teaching jobs and the like as well.

Kind of forgot the names - Happy Family, Formosa Hostel, etc.

Get in touch with Lin Tai Tai … At the Formosa 1 or 2… she owns and runs both of them. I spent the first 3 months of my Taiwan experience in Taipei at the Formosa 2. The Formosa 2 is non smoking but people smoke out in the stair case, and it is not the cleanest place but that is more from the guys who are in and out of there dropping their things. My friend eventually moved to the Formosa 1 a few blocks away and said it is much cleaner but smoking is allowed inside, and there are some strange but harmless older guys who have been there a long time.

You will have the best introduction to Taipei if you stay at a hostel. Someone is always headed somewhere and you can tag along to get the hang of it all.

Got all my contacts and teaching jobs through there … agents and schools phone the hostel asking if anyone wants to work. That is your best bet. She is like a mommy to me. I still go and crash there if I stop in Taipei. Visit the old guys that are still there.

Two years ago her weekly rate for a dorm bed (bunk bed) was 1500nt a week. Take a teeny tiny private if you can get into one (usually the long term stays get first dib on them though) a private was 2200nt a week back then.
