Intellectual Property (those in the field)

I know this is a long shot, but are there any other foreigner IP people out there?! I haven’t been in Taiwan long and it would be nice to meet someone else in the field to talk about our experiences.

Anyway, contact me if you’re interested:

I am a trademark attorney and I also assist our patent people and do some (very limited) copyright work.

There are others?

I manage a Patent & Trademark Law Office in Taipei with a background in Electrical Engineering. I knew Tigerman was an attorney but I didn’t know there were other non-Taiwanese here involved in IP.

Are you working for a firm in Taiwan? Give me a shout. I’m always the only “foreigner” at all the IP seminars and conferences besides the presenters.

Whenever I meet a Forumosan they always say “Tigerman’s in IP Law too”, but I haven’t met any foreigners in person that work in this field.

It would be great to meet both of you.

I’m not an attorney, but I am an engineer with an electrical engineering background. I will be taking the test to become a patent agent in a couple of months.

The “firm” I work for has about 5 foreigners in it (all men), and about 80 Taiwanese working in it.

If you have a job for a patent agent, I’d be happy to consider it. If you guys do get together, I’d be happy to tag along. It’d be nice to finally meet a few more Forumosans, especially the soon-to-be-the-number-one-poster Tigerman.

I will not let myself pass sandman…

I’m an attorney with a Taipei law firm that handles a substantial amount of IP work, registration of trademarks (though Tigerman’s a better expert at that), licensing and transfers of IPR, and lots of enforcement – working with investigators, police and other authorities to initiate raids and prosecuting criminal and civil actions against infringers. We recently won guilty verdicts against the 3 defendants in an action against local counterfeiters and the defendants were each sentenced to 1 yr and 10 months in jail, which is a pretty good result in Taiwan. I’m working right now on setting up an ongoing enforcement program for a major US company and we’re preparing for their first raids.

Scomargo, I wonder if you work for the same firm that I was offered a job with a couple of years ago. Was the firm created by one Taiwanese man with very good English skills, who attended uni in the US and who is still the only owner/partner. I forget his name – Lawrence or Wilbur or something like that?

Anyway, I’d be happy to join all of you for an IP-fest of some kind, if the wife and baby will permit.

I’m sure most other Forumosans are rolling their eyes and thinking… “wow, sounds like a real great time”.

MT, yes, that’s the place. Not what I would call a law firm, but I guess it could be called an IP firm. We have one US patent attorney at this time.

No, it’s not a law firm. I thought it was referred to as a patent firm, and I got the impression it was probably fairly good at patent applications. I liked the boss, felt he is a clever, ambitious man and was impressed with how quickly he built up his business. I also passed the test that he gave me, which involved reading extremely technical patent claims and evaluating them, even though I am not so technically inclined. In fact that’s why I turned down the position – because it seemed too technical for me. My present employment involves a much wider range of issues. And, finally there was the location. I didn’t feel like moving or commuting down there. But, I hope it is going well for you. For an engineer it seems like a decent place to work.

I’m sure most other Forumosans are rolling their eyes and thinking… “wow, sounds like a real great time”.

Will there be free beer? :s

I thought my post would go unnoticed and ignored. Would someone like to propose a meeting time and place? My technical background is in Electrical Engineering and have been working at overseas’ offices for some time now. Would love to meet other expats in the field.

I’m up for it. Weekday evenings are best for me. Who else?

You guys have probably all met each other by now, but just thought I’d let you know that I’m going to make my first Forumosa happy hour on August 13th. Hope to see some of you guys there.

Oh, by the way, Tigerman lied when he wrote this earlier in the thread:

Yes… a flurry of activity in the Internat’l Politics Forum led to my passing sandman… but I think he has passed me now… not certain.

Sorry I will not get to meet you at the happy hour. I will be in the US then. Look forward to meeting you and all our other IP geeks soon.

That’s funny, TM, I’ve been noticing the next happy hour at Alleycats and I, too, was very disappointed that I can’t make it because I’ll be in the US. Up in in mountains in Colorado to be exact. Woohoo!!! :bouncy:

But I’m looking forward to pizza and beer at Alleycats in the future.

My boy is in Colorado right now… climbing, hiking, horseback riding, etc…

Rocky Mountain High?

Have a nice trip!

I can’t make it either as I’ll be in China. Of the IP geeks, I’ve only met TMTM so far (that I know of). Maybe next happy hour we can drive the rest of the members to tears (with boredom and pedanticism).

What am I, chopped calamari?? Sheesh. :raspberry:

Oh, come on. IP people have the best senses of humor in the world. Why, I came up with a great joke just while posting this:

GPL: IP Freely.
