-It is the first time I have seen the “hapa” word as well, so I am just as curious as you for an explanation.
hapa literally means “half” in hawaiian, but it is commonly used to describe someone of mixed background, mainly half white half asian. It is commonly used term and by no means deroggatory. You hear it all the time in hawaii because there are soo many hapa people (it seems more people are hapa than 1 single ethnicity) and I guess they got sick of just calling themselves some PC term like “biracial” or something. it is considered its own category of ethnicity, people refer to themselves as hapa, etc.
