IP Addresses: what do they mean?

One user is harassing another user at my forum at Parent Pages. She posts using 3 different aliases (which I figured out because she was silly enough to use the same email address). The IP addresses are not exactly the same, only the first half of the numbers match up. Does that mean she posts from an internet cafe or maybe a work station? I can ban all the IP addresses used so far along with her email address right, but what else can I do besides check the board frequently?

She is a pain in the ___. And a home wrecker too. :fume: :raspberry:

Some people have rotating IP addresses (I think that is what they call it). It could be that she is using different internet caf

By the way, real physical addresses were also posted by the administrator of www.englishschoolwatch.com and it seemed to get the problem under control, but I don’t know about the legality of it all.

You could ban the user by email address as well. You could also go to General Admin -> Configuration and set Enable account activation to Admin (then you’d have to approve new users).

If the user is using similar usernames you can block certain parts of names.

I’d probably just do the fisrt thing (Turn no admin approval) and leave it that way for a while, you also might as well ban the person from using that username,

IP address are just like street address (sort of). They go WWW.XXX.YYY.ZZZ.

Maybe look at each section like this:
W=Country
X=State
Y=City
Z=Street address

So, in the example above is you banned a whole ZZZ section it could be like banning a whole city block to ban one person (if that makes any sense).

Hope that helps, I’ve only had a couple trouble makers (and some spammers).

Great explanation, thank you both!
