Iphone Phone Card while on vacation?

Hey Guys

Next week I will begin my vacation in Taiwan and im bringing my Iphone but do not want to pay the crazy fees associated with AT&T so will be turning off the Roaming etc. Is there a way to get a Phone card to use with it to avoid paying roaming? Or will I be able to find a cheap pay as you go phone in Taiwan ? Thanks for your help! I just need to know my options

You’ll have to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone first. Yes, you can get prepaid service. Do a search on cell phone service and you’ll get tons of information on it.

Thanks for the info. I would never jailbreak my phone though. I work for corporate offices of AT&T haha. But thanks!

You can get a local cell phone to receive calls (receiving calls is free in Taiwan, BTW, if things haven’t changed) and use Skype on your iPhone for international calls. There’s wireless all over the city of Taipei, not too hard to get it set up. It’s not 100% but a lot cheaper than your company’s inflated, overrated “international” roaming service (no offense but AT&T “customer service” are a$$es.) (Not to mention the inflated, overrated cell service in the States, but that’s another matter. :fume: )

You can set up cell service easily if you can get some old cell phone that takes a SIM card, bring it from the States if you like (I use my old Treo) and then go to Kuanchien Road (Guanqian Rd.) in front of the train station in Taipei, left-hand side as you walk southward from the train station down the road, across the cross street from the big department store is a cell phone company. They’ll issue you a pre-paid SIM with a passport only. You can top up your minutes by buying a card at any convenience store. (I do the one-month-a-year thing in Taiwan.)

Your email has been most helpful! thanks a million

You can get your phone hacked at the computer market and down load all the apps for free according to one of my students.

Dude ATT hoses you. Most Telcos and handset providers freely offer unlocked handsets to employees. Since the iPhone(and most smartphones) have abysmal battery life, i highly recommend picking up a cheap phone like a razor off Amazon or something and use that as your travel phone.

Pay as you go phones are super cheap. Leave your iPhone at home. The temptation to unlock it will be overwhelming.

And you work for AT&T! Talk about having staff that are ‘into’ their companies’ products! Seriously, why get an iPhone in the first place, just get a real phone as a supplement.

Not all AT&T employees get perks like free phone service and international roaming.

Scrubs in the stores do, so you would think that they at least hooked corporate up.
