Sorry for this quite likely stupid question, but here is goes:
A friend of mine just got a brand new Ipod Nano, and then went away on vacation. She gave it to me before she left, and told me to play around with it. It hasn’t been opened yet.
I think I remember hearing something about Ipods only working on 1 computer? Is that right?
If I start loading it with songs and playing with it, will she have any trouble taking it to her house and computer and using it?
No, she won’t have any problem. She’ll just have to delete the music you put on it. That, or use one of many programs to move the music on to her computer before setting it’s new ‘home’.
The only experience I have with this (still valuable) is that I opened my iPod by loading it on my friend’s computer. I took all her music, of course, and when I got it home I had to reformat the whole darned thing because her computer was a mac and mine was a PC. What does reformatting involve? Wiping the whole thing back to an empty, like new iPod. Next time I’ll know.
Yep, they don’t like to sync from PCs if they are set up on a Mac and vice versa. Also, if you have iTunes set up to auto-sync, it will just wipe everything and resync to whatever is on the other computer so she should set it to 'manage music manually, if she wants to keep whatever you have put onto it.
Buttercup, you are right. Set it to sync manually, then when you take it over to her computer copy all the files. They will come across as hidden, so unhide them. Then you can reformat the ipod and reload it with everything on her hard disk, whcih will of cours einclude all the tunes you copied for her. Job done.
We run about 4 ipods off our home machine and have successfully “backed up” music from about 6 other machines.
Alright…thanks for all the info my wonderful friends!
