Is this really a necessary state function in Ireland? It seems an unnecessary defense of people’s right–not to have their beliefs offended? A far cry from “fire” in a theater. Where is the line?

I missed that one. I haven’t read the papers from home for a few weeks now. Judging by the way things were heading when I left 7 yrs ago the government seems to be bending over backwards to make it look like they’re making the effort to welcome our new outlander buddies and protect them from the heavy hand of Irish racists etc.
