Right. Underspending isn’t America’s problem. Guy doesn’t agree though.
You know the debt went down via accounting. They bought back U.S. long-term debt with U.S. short-term debt.
S.S. United States being evicted due to financial difficulties. Symbol of American pride and excellence headed for final resting place on ocean floor.
“The S.S. United States has inspired millions the world over as a symbol of American pride and excellence,” Susan Gibbs, president of the SS United States Conservancy, said in a news release. “Converting the world’s fastest ship into the world’s largest artificial reef will write a new chapter for the S.S. United States as a world-class destination.”

Over 90% of ninimum wage workers receive more than the $7.25 federal level. Of the 16 states that pay a $7.25 minimum wage, all are Republican. Others range from $10.10 in Michigan to $16.20 in Washington State. Yes, it’s low, but largely is a matter of choice (i.e. stop electing Republicans).
91% of Americans have health insurance (could it be universal? Yes- stop electing Republicans)
“Stats don’t matter.” Yeah, I’ve noticed that. “Big numbers make my head hurt, so I’ll listen to some guy on the intertubes instead”.
Um, no. The rundown of the debt under Clinton was caused by the first big push on the internet clicking in, as well as a housing boom. Was it sustainable? Probably not. The Fed warned about
paying off the deficit, and later the debt, so they thought it was real.
I’ve never even heard of this ship.
Wrong
Which part is “wrong”?
Guy
Learn about swapping debt at higher rates for debt at lower rates.
I’m not asking for your advice. I am asking you to be more precise when you respond to a multi-pronged point in this case by @MikeN1 . Otherwise it’s unclear what you are disagreeing with.
Guy
Just put up a meme @CTaitung
The absence of end punctuation here is a nice touch.
Guy
Anything to keep you in the mix, huh?
He’s made this point before but frankly doesn’t make any sense. Even if it were this debt swap, which I couldn’t find any information on, debt is still debt regardless if it’s short term or long term.
There was no accounting trick other than balancing the budget. Something hypocritical republicans have repeatedly failed to do.
When I worked at Walmart, I started out at 9 bucks an hour and it went to 10, then almost 11 over the years I worked there. You get a 20 cent raise per year otherwise. The McDonald there (every Walmart had a McDonald in it for some reason), the worker told me they were getting around 8 an hour. These wages are not living wages in Austin. I have no idea if it’s gone up since, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t.
Also American health insurance is crap. The deductible is sky high, the option very limited. You got anything moderate and your insurance would drop the ball on you, and the final cost is still higher than if you flew to Taiwan and went self paid. So most Americans might have insurance, it would be crap insurance that costs at least 2-3x as much as NHI payment in Taiwan and still end up paying way more.
Taiwan’s McD worker is getting around 180 something an hour, and considering the really low big mac index in Taiwan, this is actually a livable wage.
I’m not sure a private ship that hasn’t been in service for 55 years and that nobody seemed to care about enough to make a meaningful bid to save (it looks like the two primary interested parties for.it were both looking to sink it) is something that is a meaningful part of history - it’s less history than historical footnote. But thanks for the tidbit. ;).Soooo… How’s it relevant to this thread? Just because someone named it SS United States back in the day?
Nope.
Lots of options, from total crap to super awesome.
The percentage is so high because a lot of them (40+%) are on really very decent govt paid insurance.
Super awesome means super expensive.
No, it doesn’t. My family had great insurance with a 10-dollar copay. Free dental cleanings. 30-dollar ER charge.
Try getting a good job and things won’t be so bad. Work at Walmart as a schlub and well-- enjoy Obamacare.
The whole point behind stuff like universal healthcare is that you shouldn’t have to work at faang companies to get good insurance. You can work Walmart type jobs in Taiwan without being put into destitution because you got sick. That alone protects you from greedy laoban than the states does.
I still stand by super expensive. You might not be paying but your boss is.
