If I remember correctly, there are myths that certain fantastical creatures (call them what you will elves, pixies, etc) could be set free if given new clothes.

When I went to college in Santa Barbara my apartmentmate, who worked at the local airport (mainly to support a real nasty Coke habit 
) often saw John Travolta and his boyfriend getting all emotional and affectionate at the departure gate when John had to leave.
