On ‘our’ very own sister site I just noticed these:
“Announcing the availability of captive born and bred baby monkeys of various species. Capuchin monkeys, Squirrel monkeys and marmosets”,
as well as these:
“Captive born and bred Talking african grey parrots currently available for sale. Babies and breeding adult pairs. All DNA sexed and healthy with papers. Very sociable birds. We also have other exotic bird species like Macaws and Cockatoos”.
I want to know is this legal here in Taiwan (as long as you don’t export them)?
Can anybody tell me that? I just tried to get that info from the Taipei Municipal Institute for Animal Health, but currently no-one is available who could speak to me in English and my Chinese is too poor to ask these questions…
i’ve gone off monkey brains since that last thread discussion anyway…
but it may well be legal here. the prices are in US dollars, ($1100 per) so maybe they are bred in USA? and smuggled in in irishstu’s belly box.
Or mailed, it does happen.
The parrot ad says they are in China (or it could be a Taiwan town mispelt). Which doesn’t fill me with confidence.
Far be it from me to jump in with both feet, I’m leaning to the “these individuals are unscrupulous dirty fucktards” train of thought. Just a feeling.
Read the rest of that link. Then consider whether you think advertising for sale on a non-specialist site, even with the “experienced handlers only” disclaimer, isn’t the work of a dirty bastard.
There is an outdoor restaurant down here that keep two monkeys in a small cage. I didn’t notice for a few months but now that I have I won’t be going back. (Sucks cause the food is sooooo good)
I want to know if it’s illegal to keep them as pets in general. If so, I will report them to the proper authorites.
i stayed in a place with a ‘pet’ vervet monkey in malawi once. the owners said it was as much fun as, well, a barrel of monkeys (Ha!) until it started to realise that it had balls. then it became not much fun, escaped from the human handlers, and basically lived just out of reach in the roof, on the roof, in the orchard, etc. it never ran away because the wild ones nearby tried to kill it, but it did make life an absolute trial for the tourists staying in the hotel: stealing food, terrorising kids (at least the ones that didn’t have slingshots) whatever. there was some bonus: it did keep the number of rats down, and warned when troops of baboons were coming, so it hadn’t yet been shot when i was there. but they did say its time was short!

I’ll find out. In the meantime, why don’t you name the restaurant?
Thanks. For the convenience of others reading this thread, here is a screencap of the ad, and FYI an enhancement of the face of the woman shown in one of the pics.
I doubt someone would put their own picture in if it were an illegal sale, but you never know. Anyone know where a 915 phone number is?
