Just to follow up, I did email the ministry of education asking if it was legal to teach 5 year olds in a cram school with an ARC. I didn’t get a response.

I’m not overly worried about burning bridges even though the school’s owner retaliates by cutting hours. I already know I’m not going to be working for this cram school in February when my one year contract is up due to stagnant pay. The director told me that teachers only get raises if they work for the school for a few years, they’re willing to work the $290/hr summer and winter camps (I’m getting 700/hr for teaching), and the school likes them.

This class isn’t at my normal location. It’s a 40 min mrt trip from my place (each way) so I don’t know if it’s worth the pay because it’s just a 90 min. class.

Whenever I say I don’t want to teach kindergarten, my director is really quick to respond “this isn’t a kindergarten, it’s a cram school”.

They may not even have any interest in him but a rival school may have an interest in messing with competition

Not just for rival schools but everyone in general. I’ve seen how vindictive some Taiwanese are when they’re mad. I’ve known girls to report people for illegally working when they felt slighted.

If you don’t want to teach this age you should be firm and unyielding regardless of the legality. There’s plenty of jobs out here anyway. Don’t make yourself miserable teaching what you don’t want to teach

I’m going to calculate my finances before I put my foot down just in case my other classes disappear. I’m a first year teacher so I’ve only been working for half a year. I’ve only been able to save about 80k since last February.

You could go in person to the MOE and ask. The last time I wanted a government response I sent a letter by registered mail. They sent me one back registered mail They answered my question in great detail and within nine days.

One can also call 1999 and ask to be transferred to the MOE. I’ve done this twice regarding kindergarten work’s legality.

The rule of thumb, when dealing with cram school owners and managers, is not to trust a word from their mouths. They will lie, cheat, steal, blame, scream, cry…(you name it) just to get their way. They couldn’t care a f@ck about you even if it means you get deported. They are the scum of the earth so always make sure your ducks are in a row before you agree to anything with them.

Actually, the fines these days are quite high for illegal employment. Many bosses may not realize how high the fines can run. It used to be a slap on the wrist. Not any more.

Life sure was more fun back before Taiwanese started taking laws seriously. Not to mention cheaper. Now it’s turned into just another bland developed country. All the things we liked about Taiwan have slowly faded away.

It was a 180k fine for the employer years ago.

750K nowadays for an employer. 30K for the employee I believe. Then there are now 10 year bans if you get caught working illegally and deported.

You forgot the worst bit for workers… it’s quite low paid for a developed country and yet long working hours for many industries. It’s getting a bit better overall but for teachers …nope.

The employer doesn’t care , so yet again we say don’t do it, like a broken record.

They do not care about you they care whether or not they get fined. That’s it. If you work at Kindy and it’s not even on your work permit address and get caught you’re gone.

Yeah, I put my foot down and said no. They asked a couple more times but my answer didn’t change
