Is there an INDIE music scene here?

I will be moving to Taiwan within the next couple months (buying my ticket next week) and I am just wondering if there is much of an indie/experimental/hardcore music scene here, I highly doubt I will know of any of the bands in Taiwan that would play the type of music I enjoy, but I was just perhaps wondering if anyone knew of any? Just stuff like Blooth Brothers, Fear before the March of flames, circle takes the square, saetia, orchid, the organ, death from above 1979, hot hot heat (old stuff), interpol, etc… I know I can always just continue to download the music I enjoy, but I also goto alot of live event band shows, and also do ALOT of band photography, mainly live event, but some promo work. (would there be any need for my services here for that aswel?)

Thanks all, just hopefully i’ll get to experience my music live in taiwan instead of only on my computer

Or any know of any groups or communities that are into the whole indie/piercing/tatoo thing?

There is going to be a big heavy/metal/hardcore fest at The Wall from the 25th to the 26th of November. If you are interested in band photography that would be a good place to start as there will be about 7 or so of Taiwan’s heavy bands there. These are the guys who go to most of the shows and will know what’s happening and where and why and whatever.
I guess you’ve read about the big tattoo convention that will in Taipei in December too. Do a search on this site and you will find discussions about anything from piercings to heavy bands. There are some cute punk bands around too that make for interesting photos and friends.
Hope to see you at The Wall for the heavy gig, unless you’re an asshole, in which case forget it. :smiling_imp:

Some useful links (wish I knew how to do the cleaner link thing using just names):

The Wall www.the-wall.com.tw

Chthonic www.chthonic.org

www.wannaplaymusic.com.tw has links to many bands, including Infernal Chaos

www.bdsm.com.tw the bondage site

www.taiwantattoo.com

www.taiwan-tattoo.com.tw

There’s also a tattoo place downstairs at The Wall and loads of people hanging out in the alley next to California Fitness centre at Hsimen Ting. I can’t think of any other cool band sites right now because they break up every two seconds.

That second link looks like it would be rad to shoot, it’s a bit heavy for me, as i’m not a huge fan of death metal and such (even tho I goto shows here to shoot my friends bands and such), but it was still nice. I don’t exactly want to start getting into the bondage scene by myself really, haha, even tho bondage and the likes are a big interest of mine.

I tried that other music site, but yeah, I guess I have to download some more plugins to see better  (I’m not in Taiwan yet, I should be there in about 2 months, so early january-mid jan).

I also suggest having a look at Taiwan Ho. There are some articles about the indie music scene there and some of the people that post on the forum are into punk/indie music.

This festival went further afield than just Taipei. Kaoshiung and Taichung were included. Here’s some shots from Sunday November 27th at Nuno’s Live House in Taichung.

Chthonic

Grim Force

Zombie Ritual

Grim Force and Zombie Ritual are Japanese bands.

Yes, it was fun. We all piled in cars and headed off for some midnight munching and drinking in Gunguan (Taipei) afterwards. However, since I can’t speak much Japanese it was kind of weird and I talked mostly with my friends who were there. I didn’t take many photos as I was dancing most of the time. Damn, they should have more parties like that!

I’m busy uploading a whole bunch of photos too. Unfortunately I can only have 3 sets so it’s all mixed up in the music section. I don’t think I’ll get it all done tonight, but most of the Invalifest ones are up.

The tourists are too alternative but here’s the link to their music files

Their performances are terrible though. They’d have to be one of the worst bands in Taiwan. Probably the worst; well, almost.

If we’re not just limiting bands by genre, and simply ‘indie band’ = ‘unsigned band’, there are MANY indie bands in Taiwan. and it’s not hard to find indie bands in Taiwan that play hardcore and emo.
