Only in Taiwan, the news sounds like tabloids and the tabloids are much worse!
v good point!
I would assume that the threads with the “bad news” are the threads that has the most replies and views…e.g. the fight at the pub, bitching about various other pubs, etc…[/quote]
Yes, thats right.
When you are here you can put it all into context & realise that this is a great place to live. From a distance it might look rather scary.
eg The only time Taiwan seems to make the international news is typhoons, major earhtquakes & fighting legislators. Where as these things
are a very minor part of life here (unless you are caught in a mud slide I suppose…)
I think the filtering stops with time. When I first arrived and realised more and more about Taiwan I certainly filtered the negative. I was looking for a way to support my decision that they could understand.
I used to get a lot of comments like " Why do you live in that God forsaken place. You should move closer to home." I just take/took it in stride and smile.
I don’t filter anything now and tend to tell all kinds of negative aspects of life here. But my life is very narrow, I spend almost all of my time working and driving to work.
For me it’s not so much a problem with where I have chosen to live but finding a way to bridge the distance between us. I phone once a week, email photos, use webcam, and use chat. My wife also travels home once or twice a year. All that seems to help. If your family are not all that computer literate you might want to get it all set up before you leave.
I filter everything and don’t talk to my family :s

I am an adult.
Not at all - I simply asked a question in a forum. My sincere apologies for doing that.
I got a few mixed answers. I found out that: some people filter info to their family and friends, some don’t. It was said that this forum is more negative than positive, so maybe not a good web site to send to parents. So, no I am not trying to make them less nervous. If I was to make them nervous about me coming to Taiwan, I have quickly learnt that I WOULD send them a link to this web site.
I just wanted some answers to my questions about if people who live in Taiwan filter their info to back home…and if this web site would be a good idea…
Not overly intelligent - they are average…
I understand that you want to keep on increasing your post tally, but still…there must be better and more useful things you can say?
Or maybe you can’t?
