My very first introduction to Taiwan traffic was when my friend didn’t buckle up on the taxi ride from the airport. She said this is Taiwan, no need for the rear seats. I asked her if physics was different in Taiwan, she didn’t know how to answer to that. I said to her that as long as she was in a car with me, she had to buckle up. It’s been a long time since the last time I saw her, I hope she’s still using the seatbelt.
Oh yeah, a mother in Taichung got in trouble earlier this month for having a fake license plate. She was confused and then police mentioned that the plate number is suspended due to a drunk driving. When she heard this the she recalled that her 44yr. old son had gotten in trouble for drunk driving, but it turns out he didn’t tell his mother the license plate was suspended. The son was too afraid to tell his mother so he went online to buy a fake plate and put it on the car. Well when the mom was on the road the police noticed the fake plate and stopped her. Now she looks to be in trouble.
Not far from where I live there’s 興進路,the car parking there is consistently way too close to the intersections. That’s where that car accident I “caused” by braking for a pedestrian occured… Couldn’t see her until it was way too late. And this is obviously consistently made worse by illegal parking right up to, occasionally on, the pedestrian crossing. And it becomes more problematic, as this road is split by direction east west by a park situated in-between, occasionally punctuated by roads cutting through north-south. It can be properly irritating to drive down 興進 because I rarely see what’s going on at the intersection ahead until I’m almost there.
Just maddening. It’s like the double yellow lines… The govt/planners clearly just don’t know how to use them safely. parking right up to the intersection, go for it, passing double yellow going into a curve, go for it, straight road with clear view? Nah, no passing there
Picture driving a white SUV: you start with a lot on your mind (the wide base of the cone), but as the drive goes on, things begin to narrow and focus, just like working through emotions. The idea seems to be that you start with everything overwhelming you, and gradually, by focusing on smaller, more manageable issues, you bring things under control.
More and more I’m of the opinion they need to import some engineers to solee the road/traffic problem. Like the advanced chip design, if they’re given the plans and not allowed to chabuduo implementation, we know this can get sorted. Will be expensive and painful, but not moreso than the carnage and snarl we currently see in the roads
Car changes lanes and hits a scooter going straight…knocking the 29 year old rider down and running over here. The 29yr. old died from her injuries.
EDIT: Footage from the dashcam from the vehicle in front of the scooter when the accident happened…the driver that hit the scooter just keeps driving.
2nd EDIT: The 65yr. old driver of the car that hit her is being charged with negligent death. The driver of the other car parked in front that was parked seems be charged with negligent death as well because the scooter rider, who was illegally riding on the shoulder at first, moved into the regular traffic lane where she was hit and killed by the car merging into her. So you can legally park and do nothing wrong, but you risk getting a negligent death charge because someone else runs over the scooter rider who wasn’t even in the right spot to begin with…and who also had already changed back into the regular traffic lane long before she came up to the parked vehicle…
Runaway migrant worker opens car door without looking, knocking a grandma, mom, and daughter on a scooter down right in front of an SUV who has no time to completely dodge and runs over someone. Grandma in ICU, mom has a pelvic fracture, and daughter has bruising. The migrant worker then seems to runaway. He has already been caught.
Are you sure that’s a shoulder? Hard to tell the line width but it looks comparable to the dashed line width and there’s a yellow line at the road edge so it may be a slow vehicle lane.
Regardless of whether it’s a lane or a shoulder the parked car was in both it and the regular lane so illegally parked in the regular lane and possibly also in the other lane if not adhering to the yellow line rules.
RIP that lady. The 65 year old clearly should not be driving and hopefully a major public message is delivered that the implications of illegal parking go far beyond the police politely asking you to move or receiving a few hundred NT fine.
It’s a bit hard to tell since the dashed lines are repainted so they overlap with the old markings making them looking slightly wider than the actually are. Definitely the shoulder there.
Slightly easier to tell here. Although to be honest quite a few times it’s kind of hard to tell without being there in person…and even then it can be hard especially when the markings have been worn down after a while.
You’d think given how bad people’s eyesight is here when on the road (stop sign? what stop sign?) they’d make it’d much more obvious than just an extra 5cm wider than the slow lane divider. This country loves paint so much so why not paint it 20cm wide to make it much more obvious, even after some wear and tear it will be easier to tell.
Also looks like the car parked on the side was already getting ready to turn back into the traffic lane but was waiting for traffic to pass (turn signal on and wheel slightly turned) so maybe already moved from the side and saw traffic coming so he stopped to wait for it to clear. Seems to be no red or yellow line there at that spot as well.
Main problem is the other driver just merging into her and driving off afterwards…so now the case is being treated as a hit and run.
In another horrific case an 18yr. old who has had his driver’s license for less than 1 month makes an absolute shit left turn while failing to yield to a drive going straight and collides with the scooter rider head on, killing them. He probably learned how to do that shit left turn from watching his family doing it his whole life and just about every other driver in the country doing it as well.
Here’s another shit left turn. Cut across multiple lanes to make a left turn…in front of a damn ambulance.
Sometimes a driver is so bad, that I go out of my way to report them.
Yesterday a car driver was blocking five disabled scooter parking spots to buy food. Then pulls out in front of me without yielding, forcing me to brake hard not to crash into them. Afterwards rolls up to a red light, stopping on top of the pedestrian zebra crossing for a few seconds, then rolls through a busy intersection during red light phase.
The brazen disregard of traffic laws in such short amount of time was astonishing.
I hope they come to the conclusion that ordering with Food Panda is way cheaper than taking the car out.
A white pick up truck drives into the DMV. After he parks he notices in front of him is a white pick up truck, the exact same model, with the exact same license plate as him. He notifies the DMV who get the police involved since the other guy has a fake plate. The guy with the fake plate drove to the DMV to attend the driver safety lecture because he was caught drunk driving…
Went out while the weather was still good earlier today and almost got hit twice by people pulling out in front of me less than 30s apart from each other. Wow great idea pulling out in front of traffic to save…let me see 0s as you get to the red light the same as everyone else. Absolutely brilliant. Morons.
Oh forgot another moron. Coming up to a red light there is a big sign to let you know there are traffic cameras at the intersection so you know…don’t be stupid. Well this guy decided he didn’t want to bother to look at the countdown for the green light and saw other traffic had a red so he started going 2s before we got the green light. Brilliant.
Taichung police starting to “step up” enforcement to deal with illegal parking at bus stops.
2nd Precinct has said that from January to September this years they have issued 1056 tickets for illegally parking at bus stops. People online have been saying this averages out to just 3 tickets per day. The fine is 300-1200NTD.
