Is traffic the worst part of Taiwan's lingering third worldism?

27yr. old driving a semi-truck trailer truck loses control going into intersection and slams into pedestrian standing on the corner, crushing his chest and exposing his organs. Dead on the spot. Due to it just happening this morning some details may be unclear, but one news report I saw said that the victim had his head severed from his body…
Looks like the victim saw it coming at the last second and tried to run out of the way…

2 construction site security guards were also injured as the truck veered into the construction site past the intersection. The driver was driving in the inner lane and then ended up all the way up on all the way out by the corner of the intersection and into the construction site. Looks like it might be hydroplaning again. Another driver driving too fast for conditions.

The driver tells news reporters that he lost control, no way to control it.

Some pedestrians injured in Keelung as a driver on drugs runs into a shop. Total of 5 people injured.

I happened to pass by a police station in Taichung the other day and I noticed a lot more impounded vehicles (scooters and cars) sitting around their station. Some saying impounded for drug driving, unlicensed, etc. I wonder if impound lots in Taichung are starting to run out of space too…

Family walking on a crosswalk has to quickly move out of the way of a right turning driver who didn’t slow down at all. The kid was hit and the driver just drove away. Happened in Pingtung. Dad threw something at the car in his rage after seeing his son get hit. Since it’s Taiwan maybe that will get him in more trouble than the driver hitting the kid…
The driver was found and now will be charged with hitting a pedestrian and hit and run. Police have notified the driver to report to the police station.

This happened in Pingtung’s Neipu…the same area where there’s a bunch ofpeople who are protesting the sidewalks next to schools and future plans for one of the streets into downtown.

He’s a professional, we’ll have to trust his words.

What a nice place is Keelung! Look at that… er… what the hell is that?

Weekly reminder that Dr. Street is open for voting again now that it’s Monday. Make sure to cast your votes or suggest places for improvements. So far looks like Taichung only has 6 of the top ten spots, as compared to 7 last year when all the voting was done. Still a while before the voting ends so who knows, maybe Taichung will pull in some more votes to catch up.

Out of curiosity, anyone familiar with this spot in Tamsui? Looks like there’s not really anything out there but the voting has it as 2nd so far, with it even being first for a bit last week. From looking around on the few spots on Google maps it looks like this section isn’t even opened to traffic at all as the road is completely blocked there.

Drivers voting to open it to traffic?

I’m on a bus. A Panda delivery guy on a scooter just brake checked us. Real pandas are smarter than this.

It takes a high level of skill for a scooter to do that to a bus.

Or stupidity.

Unfortunately he certainly won’t get the punishment he deserves but hopefully all his friends, family, neighbours and colleagues get to see what a *&^# he is. Watch to the very end.

I had to stop halfway because nothing was happening

Police had a hard time identifying the deceased victim as he had no documents on his person to identify him and his phone was destroyed in the incident. Turns out he’s a migrant worker who was walking back to his dorm. The driver has posted bail, NT$50,000.

Another situation going on these few days. A person online says that a tow company vehicle almost hit him and his child while crossing the street, allegedly only slamming on their brakes after he yelled out at the driver. The driver then gets out of the vehicle and allegedly goes up to him and punches him in the face. Witnesses provided dashcam footage to police. This tow company is also contracted with the Freeway Bureau.

Gemini AI translation of the allegation:

Latest Masterpiece of Taiwan’s “Pedestrian Hell”: Almost Hit While Crossing with a Child, Then Punched for Speaking Up

It was supposed to be the eve of a happy Children’s Day. On the night of April 3rd, while my family and I were crossing a crosswalk in Lukang according to the traffic lights, a tow truck belonging to Wencheng Towing Co., Ltd. (License Plate: KEJ-7555) — a contractor for the National Freeway Bureau — turned without slowing down at all. It almost took out both me and my young daughter.

If I hadn’t yelled at the top of my lungs while on the crosswalk, the driver wouldn’t have realized people were there and slammed on the brakes. My family and I might be gone. In that split second, my emotions took over, and I shouted at the driver through his window. The driver got out, said a few words, and immediately punched me in the face, knocking my glasses off!

What’s even more insane is that after hitting me, he taunted: “I didn’t even hit you! Even if I did, the most I’d have to do is pay some compensation to settle it!”

Is this the standard for vehicles contracted by the National Freeway Bureau? A vehicle responsible for “roadside rescue” nearly kills someone in the city and then violently assaults a pedestrian. Thinking human life can be calculated in dollars and hitting people whenever he’s annoyed—I absolutely cannot let this slide.

Finally, I want to thank the couple in the car behind us who stayed at the scene. They witnessed the entire failure to yield and proactively provided their dashcam footage to the police; I was deeply moved. This kind of malicious driver needs to take a trip to court! Everyone, please be careful when crossing the street, and if you see a Wencheng Towing vehicle, remember to stay far away.

Condemn Violence.

The pedestrian has filed a lawsuit against the driver for assault.

Now that this has spread on social media a little bit a few people have left negative reviews/comments on Google maps and the company has responded by saying that the driver and the vehicle do not belong to their company and the driver is a contracted worker. They also say that they if the negative reviews/comments are not deleted they will sue people for damaging their reputation by posting/sharing false information. The driver has also sued the person he assaulted.

Not even that, the whole platform is only for sidewalk stuff and narrowing traffic lanes for sidewalks or widening sidewalks. I have really no idea how that spot has so many votes given it seems fine as is for pedestrians since the road is closed off there making it basically pedestrian only as far as I can tell from the most recent google street view images. Even then it already has a sidewalk there too. Really weird.

What’s also weird is why does this kind of place need 9 lanes of traffic? This is the section open for traffic. Should just turn the whole outer lane into just parking making to easier for people to park this far out and go for a walk, jog, etc. in the area or play at the nearby tennis court. Also get rid of one of the lanes to widen the sidewalks and bike paths.

What’s hilarious here is you can’t even ride in the inner lane to make a U-turn…you have to do a stupid hook turn, but guess what hook turns must be performed from the outermost through lane…there are no through lanes here.

Same attitude from the company as the driver. :sideeye:
Shift blame and threaten to sue. Nobody wants to take responsibility. Why do they allow contractors to use their company name on the vehicles then?
Earning money from it and delegating actual work to unqualified drivers. When something bad happens, it is not their problem.

Amazon style set up. They also blame all the contactors when bad news hit, like delivery drivers needing to pee in bottles as there were no bathroom breaks.

Do a search on TikTok, might have a TLDW summary.

I doubt it, as is people don’t take traffic related incidents seriously at all. Besides, a guy like this has no shame, but he sure is being a big baby over being asked to not illegally park and screw up traffic. Not to mention deliberately accelerating towards the parking security guy in what looks more like attempted murder. No worries, police will do as much as they can to not do anything, because this person should absolutely be on our roads. The guy who was almost hit didn’t press any charges, but police despite having clear video evidence of someone attempting to use a car as a weapon to intimidate someone, with potential intent to maim or kill someone, i.e. a threat to public safety will not do anything. They will simply step up patrols. So a lot of nothing.

Speaking of people with no shame, how about another politician! Last time it was some Changhua politician illegally parking at a police station and threatening the officer asking her to leave with the “don’t you know who I am?!” crap and even trying to get him in trouble and trying to screw him over right before his retirement.

This time it’s a politician in Hualian.

Here she is, Director of Hualian’s N. District Service Center and she’s also the Jian Civil Defense Captain. Fan-Chiang Hsing-ling (范姜幸玲)

She complains to the officers they didn’t ask her to leave first or try and find out who’s car it is…the officers already did warn people by blaring their siren. It’s not the officers’ job to sit there and call you and wait for her.

It’s a red line, it’s simple. She tries to use her position against the officers. She allegedly also later went to the police station and tries to pressure the station/officers over this simple NT$600 ticket, but she herself refutes this claim.

Another person with zero shame. Up in Taipei this time. Some business manager is illegally parking and blocking the road. The guy gets mad at being honked. The person honking at him to move is a taxi driver. The taxi driver gets out takes a picture from the front of the business manager’s car and then the manager just loses it and gets out and gets in the taxi driver’s face and then starts assaulting him. Also the manager was illegally parked because he was picking up his kid. What a GREAT dad. Showing his son how to be an upstanding citizen. This guy received a 4 month sentence.

The manager tried to argue that the taxi driver filming his car made him felt threatened because he came up with the excuse that the other guy was filming his kid and wife. Meanwhile it was noted that the wife actively tried to get her husband to stop. The driver also hit the taxi driver’s vehicle and damaged it.

More pedestrians being hit. Couple at an uncontrolled crosswalk try crossing and get hit by a driver who doesn’t slow down.

Driver tries to run a guy on a scooter off the road. The scooter rider reports dangerous driving to the police and the police response was there was no dangerous driving and a fine will not be issued. Driver gets mad at the scooter rider saying he needs to be riding in the “motorcycle lane”, despite the lane he was in obviously not banning motorcycles and the driver having the whole inner lane completely empty and for himself. Scooter rider also has a kid with him.

Pretty mild road rage, but it’s the middle finger so hey that’s worth something in Taiwan.
Driver tries to change lanes into another car in the intersection and cuts them off which results in him getting honked at and the driver in his anger gives the finger multiple times.

Ah yes, more garbage road users. Pull out into the road without even looking, right in front of a car. Stupid, yet these people will keep their licenses and get themselves killed one day or worse get someone else killed.

Another day another drunk driver. Police see a large truck going down a small road and his plate is so dirty you can’t read the plate (arguably done on purpose by some) so he pulls him over to check out if anything is wrong or if he just made a wrong turn. Turns out the driver is drunk, just blowing over the legal limit.

District tour bus driver hits a vehicle parked on the side of the road and kept driving. Turns out he’s drunk. Following behind was an fire dept. ambulance and the driver used his ambulance to block the tour bus driver so he couldn’t keep driving away. The tour bus driver was insanely drunk, blowing 1.44…the fact that things didn’t turn out worse was quite the stroke of luck.

Group of 14yr. olds in a car joyriding on the freeway.

Another person driving with drugs in their system. Also unlicensed. Crosses into oncoming traffic and crashes with two other vehicles. 3 people injured.

In Nantou a gravel truck driver goes into oncoming traffic and collides with multiple other vehicles. The driver of a blue truck that was hit by the oncoming gravel truck died.

They just see skilful driving everywhere

Numbers out for January 2026. Not a good start to the year.

Compared to Jan. last year there was an increase of 9.5% (23 more) in deaths. Pedestrian deaths increased by 32% (8 more).

Pedestrian deaths at intersections saw a 50% (6 more) increase.
Drunk driving saw a 116.6% (7 more) increase in deaths.

[Data source: MOTC Safety Dashboard]

I’ve had much worse and much closer than that one and police will still deny the report. It’s really luck of the draw.

The Taichung police themselves are very skillful as well. They are committed to non-action and promoting illegal behavior. Some local politicians are even pushing for further inaction from the police, wanting to expand the police no enforcement period from 10pm to 7am, rather than the police’s current no enforcement period of 12am to 2am. No other solution or attempt to try and make some changes or improvements…just do nothing.

Gemini AI translation of article:

“Reporting Experts” Sweep Taichung! 200 Cars Hit on One Road; Police and Citizens Alike Are Distraught

Taichung, April 7, 2026 — Last year, Taichung City recorded 80,000 reports of traffic violations submitted by citizens. Among these, professional “reporting experts” (bounty hunters) have been targeting specific road sections and blocks, with some individuals filing 20 to 30 reports at a time involving 100 to 200 different vehicles. This relentless reporting has caused significant distress for both residents and the police.

In response, City Councilors Tseng Chao-jung, Yang Tien-chung, Li Tien-sheng, and Lin Teh-yu have called for the implementation of a “reasonable review process” for cases where the same informant repeatedly reports the same targets within a short period. They also urged authorities to relax enforcement against parking on arcades (covered walkways) during hours when it does not obstruct traffic safety or order.

Police Response and New Measures Taichung Police Chief Wu Jing-tian stated that the department is already taking steps to address malicious reporting:

  • Late-Night Grace Period: Police generally do not issue citations for illegal parking between 12:00 AM and 2:00 AM.
  • Duplicate Reporting Filter: For reports made on the same road section, the police will not accept multiple reports for the same violation occurring within a two-hour window.
  • Prioritization: Reports that appear to be aimless or targeting the same stretch of road repeatedly will be deprioritized and handled last, unless there is an urgent safety issue.
  • SMS Notifications: The Traffic Police Corps now provides a service where car owners are notified via text message to move their vehicles immediately when a report is filed in frequently targeted areas, rather than simply issuing consecutive fines.

The Arcade Parking Dilemma Councilors Li Tien-sheng and Lin Teh-yu highlighted issues in the Dali District, where a lack of parking spaces forces residents to park in arcades. They argued that reporting experts are using the police as a “tool for revenge,” creating immense pressure on local citizens.

The councilors proposed extending the “no-fine” window for nighttime parking. Currently, enforcement is relaxed from 2:00 AM to 6:00 AM; they suggested extending this to start at 10:00 PM or 11:00 PM and end at 7:00 AM. Councilor Lin pointed out that existing regulations allow for warnings instead of citations for minor offenses that do not seriously endanger safety, and urged the police to seek central government approval to apply this spirit of leniency.

Legal Constraints Police Chief Wu emphasized that the non-enforcement periods are governed by the “Regulations on Unified Fine Standards and Handling of Violations of Road Traffic Management,” which is a central government law. Local authorities do not have the power to override these regulations. However, he noted that citizens who receive tickets can file an appeal with their reasons, and the police will evaluate those cases with leniency.

Now this case has gotten onto the news. Driver almost drove right into a family of 4. Since it’s gotten on the news police have issued a ticket for failing to yield to pedestrians. Normally they would never issue a ticket for something like this. Almost run down a family of 4 and get so upset that you get called out by a father obviously mad that you almost drove into his family you decide to get out of your vehicle and punch him in the face…

Now if the driver almost kills pedestrians one more time he will be forced to attend a safety lecture! Yay thank you MOTC!.

They’ve also seemed to have gotten some friends from at another towing business to leave 5 star reviews. Also some other accounts with only 1 or 2 reviews suddenly posting 5 stars with zero text. Maybe other employees or family/friends.

Seems like they stopped threatening to sue on the more recent negative reviews, but on some of them from before they still have the message up that the next day they will go to sue if the negative reviews aren’t deleted.

Just a day later and we have another Hualian politician in the news! Accident last year where the township representative Gao De-an blew threw a stop marking and T-boned the car with the right of way. He was already unlicensed. The victim received a concussion and chest contusions.

The township representative also boldly remarked that he was ONLY driving without a license, not drunk driving and made sure to put emphasis on the fact that he was driving a high class Audi. Oh and guess which township he represents…Jian…the same one from the previous post where the local karen politician is the Civil Defense Captain and is being a big baby over a NT$600 ticket for illegally parking on the red line.

Driver on drugs or just another run of the mill shitty driver that has no idea how to turn left? Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference. Driver turning left turns into the oncoming traffic lane and runs over a guy on a scooter waiting at the red light. Fortunately the rider’s scooter got caught under the driver’s vehicle preventing it from coming down on him and giving him enough time to get away while the driver keeps on trying to drive. Eventually the driver is able to drive away and flees the scene. Police have already notified the vehicle’s owner to come to the station but the owner has yet to go there. Police are still unsure if the driver and the owner are the same person.

In another incident at a red light, car stopped at the red light suddenly starts accelerating forward, hitting multiple people on scooters and pushing a scooter on the ground while heading towards a bus. The driver finally stops before hitting the bus, after having blown through almost the entire intersection. Looks like it’s an Uber driver. People also commented that the driver’s side rear view mirrors are even still folded inwards.

Imagine all murder attempts were handled this way.

Driver slams into the rear of a vehicle stopped at a red light without slowing down. Total of 4 cars end up involved. Driver had already lost his license last year, so he was driving without a license. Don’t worry, according to Hualian’s Jian township representative it’s only driving without a license, it’s not like drunk driving.

Another driver with drugs in their system. Driver drifts over towards the shoulder and hits a scooter which then hits a pedestrian in the leg . The driver just kept driving off and will now be charged with a hit and run on top of the drug driving.

TVBS decides to report on plastic bollards at one location in Taichung’s Shalu district after a mother with her son for some idiotic reason decides to ride on the shoulder and ride straight into the plastic bollards and crashes. Now some people are calling the plastic bollards dangerous…yeah they should be upgraded to reinforced concrete bollards then they would actually be useful for protecting pedestrians.

Some comments from people interviewed are:

It suddenly appears. If their speed is a little fast then they don’t have enough time to react. Everyday you can hear 1 or 2 people braking hard. Often see people hitting it.

Just idiots riding in the shoulder area (which is way too big anyways) and just riding straight into it…these are the same idiots who ride over the ditch cover or on the shoulder right into a truck that’s already up against the edge of the outer traffic lane with a right turn signal on well in advance (also a rarity sometimes) and gets themselves killed. Also it’s an uncontrolled intersection, they shouldn’t be going that fast.

I’ve hit it (plastic bollards) many times. You have to pay attention to the other vehicles and also the road is narrow. Cars and motorcycles can’t drive/ride side-by-side

Get this guy off the roads. It’s always been a single lane for each direction. How can people here be so terrible at driving/riding on a single lane road…

The plastic bollards are dangerous for motorcycles/scooters, but are safe for pedestrians

Massive shoulder space and only a “sidewalk” at the corner. Numerous plastic bollards have already been wrecked and thrown to the side of the road. TVBS even says the road isn’t big…you can imagine just how massive this road is before the new lines and “sidewalks” at the corners/crossings were made.

In the comments it’s mostly just people calling out the garbage riders.

Anyways, here’s another idiot blowing through a STOP marking. Maybe they should move to Jian, Hualian and be a local politician! They would fit right in.

Both cammer and driver behind him both go through the stop marking…but the driver behind overtakes by cutting across the double yellows going into the intersection…just a small thing that is quite common. I wonder how many pedestrian islands or pedestrians they’ve hit when making left turns.

More terrible drivers cutting across double yellows to make a left turn. Police didn’t issue a signal fine out of the multiple reports.

Employer lets her 19yr. old employee barrow her car. Well the 19yr. old was arrested for drunk driving. Now the employer has her vehicle’s plates suspended for 2 years. As compensation the guy who drove drunk agreed to buy the car from her, but he backed out the day before they were going to finalize the deal. The 19yr. olds mother is some online food influencer, who mostly shoots videos about food in Tainan. She claims her son only moved the car from the parking lot to the side of the road because he couldn’t find a designated driver. Police saw him commiting a traffic violation and when they pulled him over they noticed the smell of alcohol and then he blew over the legal limit.

Careful who you lend your ride too…already quite a few similar cases like this. Sometimes you see scooter shops who will lend the shop scooter to one of their customers while their scooter is being worked on…then they get caught for not having a license…
