Saw that road rage video on TV. I do wonder what I would do if I was the blue car. The white car is obviously going to keep harassing me. This is on the highway…very dangerous. Who knows what he will do like suddenly swerve in front of me or clip the back end of my car. Actually I do not blame him for pushing that car back across the line.
@lunlan Thanks for posting all these vids, but I have to ask… Does watching all this Taiwan traffic craziness not mess with your metal health? I watch one video and have seen enough for the next three months, at least.
I am just saying…that if I thought that white car was determined to run me off the road or bump into me (possibly causing major accident) I might proactively bump him to protect my wife in the car. That might sound like road rage but might be defensive driving.
Not really, mostly it’s just frustration with the relevant authorities who are keen on doing a lot of talking and do so little to actually address the issues at hand.
Even before I really cared much about the traffic stuff Taiwan really makes you desensitized to it since it’s all over the T.V. news all the time, all the really stupid accidents that can be seen on a near daily basis and all the close calls.
In Taichung a group cycling with a bunch of kids has a couple of kids crash while avoiding a delivery truck driver who suddenly does an illegal U-turn from the shoulder and pulls out in front of the group rather than waiting for a few seconds or going up to the intersection to perform a legal U-turn. Hmm wait two seconds or risk hitting a bunch of kids…
6 scooter riders are sent to the hospital after a driver in Taichung plows into them in the hook turn box. The driver is suspected of not paying attention or losing focus. Some people suffered fracture bones.
Here’s an expensive mistake…
A man renting an expensive ride forgets to use the parking brake on his very expensive and it eventually rolls away and down the hill and drops about 100m into the valley. An approximately 17 million NTD car. The car had just completed it’s registration in August and barely lasted a month in Taiwan before being totaled.
Well another tourist is probably going to end up dead in this pedestrian hell. A 67yr. old woman from Singapore in Taiwan with her family for travel. When crossing the street in Taichung she was hit and run over by a right turning bus. At the scene the woman was OHCA. This intersection is right next to 3 schools. The woman’s family had already crossed ahead of her. They had to witness their family member like that…
The driver says he did the stop and point maneuver but as we can see he still failed to notice the pedestrian.
driver claims he stopped only after hearing a scream.
I have an idea: we should shout before crossing at a pedestrian crossing—maybe then motorcycles, cars, and buses would actually see the pedestrians.
If only that had happened three years ago—how time flies. If it had, I wouldn’t have metal in the bones of my right shoulder now, nor a partially dislocated left arm, nor the aches and pains all over my body that flare up every now and then—lingering reminders of the day a motorcycle sent me flying through the air.
English article on the incident. The victim’s vital signs are back but she’s still in pretty bad shape…
She suffered a pelvic fracture and open fractures to her right upper arm and left lower limb and was in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), according to authorities.
Her vital signs were subsequently restored as she was taken to China Medical University Hospital, where she remains under treatment.
Pedestrian safety remains a concern, however, with drivers frequently failing to yield and speeding on narrow streets.
Unbelievable amount of skills on display.
Driver posts his own dashcam video on social media showing himself speeding on regular surface roads, going 110km/h and nearly hitting a car that pulls out because on a road with a speed limit of 50 it sure looks like you have a lot of space to work with…then the driver also shares how he tried to report the other driver which the police didn’t issue a fine.
Post shared online showing a new bridge getting ready to open up to traffic in Taichung…hmm something looks off about those arrows…Taiwan quality control.
Update to the Police Officer in Luzhou who illegally accessed people’s information to harass them for calling 110 to report illegal parking. He didn’t think the illegal parking was an issue worth dealing with so he got mad at having to handle all the calls.
The officer wasn’t happy about so many people calling 110 and was resentful of them so he illegally accessed their information and then used a VPN to place large number of food orders or reservations to harass them. In total the officer placed over NT$90,000 worth of orders.
As the officer confessed to the crimes and reached a settlement with all of the victims the court gave him a 1yr. suspended sentence and a NT$30,000 fine (goes to the National Treasury). He made a “temporary lapse in judgement” despite committing these acts over a period of multiple weeks and even using a VPN to try and hide his trail…
He also had to compensate Pizza Hut for their losses. He also received one major demerit.
23yr. old man riding his scooter while unlicensed. For some unknown reason he just rides straight towards the sidewalk and into a teriyaki restaurant, injuring 3 customers. 2nd part of the news clip is a driver suspected of being on drugs hitting a roadside parked vehicle and trying to flee. Both happened in Taichung. Last clip is a truck driver turning didn’t notice a person on a bicycle and ran them over and killed them in Tucheng.
A massive number of pedestrians, no sidewalk on one side (cross the intersection and no sidewalks at all) and an uncontrolled crosswalk. Despite the low speeds one person yielding gets rear ended. This is near a University.
In Taipei, some bus companies, most notably Taipei Bus, have started to make their drivers stop in front of every crossing when making left and right turns. So this, at least, shows that the problem is addressed somewhat.
It’s dangerous out there. Before crossing any street here, I make sure that vehicles cannot hit me. Never assume they will stop because you have the right of way, never! I always expect someone coming out of nowhere, making a left turn, or sth. When in doubt, I just wait for the next green light; life is too precious to be run over by idiots.
It’s kinda crossing the street 101, really. And in Taiwan, never stop making sure until you are at home. Sidewalks or sidewalk/street adjacent indoor spaces aren’t even safe!
Stopping and pointing are different actions than watching. I’ve seen drivers mechanically stopping and pointing without actually watching for pedestrians or anything.
Undisciplined lady on a bike in Zhonghe in Xinbei causes some American influencer type to wipe out trying to avoid her. Then undisciplined lady starts to curse the American! I hope he finds and sues her for damages. Total sh&t behavior all round!
The Singaporean tourist has succumbed to her injuries and passed away this morning. She came to Taiwan with 8 family members. It was their 2nd day in Taiwan. Depending on when they came in to Taiwan the victim may have been in Taiwan for less than 24hrs. before being hit on the roads in front of family.
Sadly this reminds me of the Japanese tourist who was only in Taiwan for 2 days before being mowed down in Kaohsiung in front of her son. The driver was “nervous” after seeing a police officer doing normal traffic guard duties and veered off the road and into the Japanese tourist.
Unsurprisngly a lot of comments on facebook are blaming the woman or blaming the family members for not walking with the woman. Okay and did that stop the bus driver, also in Taichung, from killing the woman and her child and hitting the husband all at once a couple of years ago…well obviously not.
Singapore should add a travel advisory for Taiwan’s traffic and pedestrian hell.
The intersection, once again, has simple issues that could’ve helped prevent issues instead of compounding them. This is next to three schools and a bank.
First off stop putting parking all the way up to the intersection which hinders visibility.
Also get all the damn scooters off the sidewalk. I’ve had to dodge people riding up and down on this exact sidewalk before. Stop putting scooter/motorcycle parking on the sidewalks. Put the scooter/motorcycle parking on the road or do more for off-road parking that doesn’t include using sidewalks.
Update to the incident earlier I shared where a truck driver turned and ran over a woman on a bicycle and killed her on the spot. Turns out the driver was on drugs, amphetamines. Looks like the driver didn’t even look as he was coming up to the intersection. Before coming up to the intersection he surely should’ve seen the woman on the bicycle and been aware of her general position and wait before making the turn…instead he pulls right up to her and turns and kills her. Don’t worry though even with the drug driving many people are still blaming the dead woman.
As an unrelated point news crew out filming films a forklift illegally on the road. So many of these illegally driving around in Taiwan and have already killed quite a few people…but still seems not enough is being done about these. I’ve had them pull out into roads and almost hit me before. Should be way heavier fines. Should also require a license plate at this point given the inevitability of these things illegally going on the roads.
I don’t miss that kind of thing. “Why was she walking there”
The biggest problem on this side of the ocean is people who good-heartedly wait at random intersections to let you go first, ignoring any concept of the right of way. Very disconcerting
