Israel-UAE Peace Deal

My thoughts:
  1. This shows that the international system is still the best explanation for international relations. Countries, regardless of ideology, form alliances against a common threat like Iran.
  2. I know a lot of people (but not all) in the Israeli and American Jewish peace camps thought this was a dumb deal. UAE signed it in exchange for Israel not doing something illegal (annexing the West Bank)? Groups like IfNotNow were not impressed.
  3. I’m also afraid this might be giving Israel more of a blank check to act with impunity against the Palestinians.
  4. Now that the deal is done, I think we might as well take advantage of increased contact between Israel and the UAE to improve Jewish-Arab understanding. I’ve always thought it’d be better for peace if Israel billed itself as a Semitic member of the region rather than a part of Europe.

In international relations, the word “illegal” has no concrete meaning. It is mere moral posturing. As is expressions of concern over the fate of the Palestinians. Nobody actually cares about them. The proof: nobody is willing to take them in.

If this works, it’s good. If it doesn’t, it isn’t. Time will tell. In the meantime, I recognize no other standard by which it can be judged.

The Iran regime is dying, but does not intend to go gently into that good night. This makes it dangerous.

There’s this thing called international law.

Calling that a thing is a bit of a stretch.

You’re right, eff the Geneva conventions.

They never amounted to much anyway.

Say, what’s the UN Security Council up to these days?
