I’m going to go hunting for some of these tomorrow, the old airfield in Donggang and the sea plane base that is in the area but I am not sure where. Does anyone know its exact location? I found these tiny bomb shelters still extant on the campus of Yuguang Elementary in Yuguang, just to the northeast of Jiadong town.

Protected against shrapnel, but hard to see how they could survive a direct hit.

As far as I know the old airbase was at Dapeng Bay which is obvious to the left as you ride into Dongggang (kilometer 258 on Highway 17). I would contact the scenic administration (08-8338100) to see if anyone can help. Their office is at the bay. Also you could contact the poster Steve Crook as he was recently at the Bay touring for a local mag.
You could also try that restaurant whose link I sent you as they have a little museum next door on Donggang history/culture.

Ah, thanks. I’ve been to Dapengwan many times; we used to go down there when I lived in Taliao.

Yeah, sorry can’t be more helpful. Steve would be the man.
BTW, here’s some background on the Catholic basilica in Wanchin (Wànjīn/Wanjin/萬金).
Okay, I think I have vindicated myself. Map of Japanese air base in Donggang in 1943 (with gps coordinates). Area was called Toko in Japanese. Look in lower right corner for sea plane base.
