You may have missed the story, but if you can’t be arsed to read the link above, basically Princess Sayako from the Japanese royal family has given up her status to marry a “commoner” (which should be read as “high level bureaucrat”).
I read that story this morning, and was looking at the photos that the bbc have. Funny thing is, right up to where it said that her new husband was a “high level bureaucrat”, I was expecting to see her with some poor farmer or something. Obviously by “commoner” they just meant non-royal, but the word “commoner” really does conjure up other images in my mind.
Still a nice story. I’m sure she’ll not be poor though.
She only has to give up her royal status because she’s a woman. A man wouldn’t have to. She $1million to compensate her from the government, the maximum allowed for a woman. A man would be able to get about $5million.
Bunch of sexists.

Only a million bucks? How will she survive? And her husband’s only a poor high level bureaucrat. I hope she likes bread and water.

A million is nothing in Tokyo - and this is a woman who has never shopped at a supermarket. She doesn’t have any experience of day-to-day living on her own money. My guess it will be gone in a couple of years.
And they are saying her husband is a “high-level” bureaucrat to save face. Yeah, he works for the government; I think his salary was listed as about $70,000 US a year. Again, in Tokyo, that’s nothing unusual.

It is true that the cost of living is really high in Tokyo, but it doesn’t mean our incomes are high as well. US$70,000/year is very standard for his age(late 30’s to early 40’s) if you are working in the industries other than financial.
Thus, the quality of living in Tokyo is pretty low, just like NYC. Small house, packed commuter train etc. However, we can easily find cool/decent restaurants, amusement facilities and “big name” companies.
Talking about the capability of ex-princess Norinomiya, she’s been trained to be a commoner since she was a child.
She holds MA and has been working for a research institute as a researcher.
As you can see from her outfit, she is far from fancy.
Although she is not the “Beauty” type like Princess Masako, she has such a beautiful smile which comes from her heart.
