Jeppson's Malört: The Little-Loved Liquor of Chicago

Can anyone from Chicago confirm this?

Sounds awful. I have trouble downing even the smoothest single malt whiskey. I don’t think I could do this. Maybe back when I was a crazy college kid…

It’s all a matter of practice, my young friend.

Also, sip, don’t down.

I’m just not a scotch/whiskey drinker these days. Or any type of hard liquor, for that matter. I spent my late teens and all my twenties trying to convince myself that I liked liquor, and then one day I decided “nope, I’ve actually always hated the harshness, and it’s time to stop pretending otherwise.” Nowadays, I just drink beer, wine and sake. Boring, I know…

I’m from Chicago and Malort is super famous. Everyone from chicago knows what it is. Anytime a visitor comes in we bring them to a bar and force it on them. It’s just something everyone does pretty much. The shot itself is disgusting. Like ridiculously disgusting. It’s not something people actually drink here because they like it. Just a rite of passage thing or if you’re having a really bad night. Which sometimes is both.
