John Rabe, the 'good nazi' of Nanjing -- memorial site

Memorial sites to be built to remember John Rabe
The three-storey house is located inside the Gulou District campus of Nanjing University, and it could be open to public next August.

“The memorial hall is to commemorate John Rabe, who saved the lives of numerous Nanjing residents during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the centre is to promote academic research of international peace and reconciliation,” said Zhang Rong, vice-president of Nanjing University.

John Rabe was born in Hamburg, Germany. He came to China in 1908. From 1931 to 1938, Rabe was in Nanjing and witnessed the Nanjing Massacre which killed at least 300,000 Chinese people.

His house was a refugee camp at the time, taking in at least 600 citizens during the massacre. Rabe also kept diaries recording more than 500 atrocities made by the Japanese invaders, which is used today as important evidence of the Nanjing Massacre.
I read about this guy when I was in the library years ago along with George Fitch and an American women who later commited suicide (forgot her name) that saved as many lives as possible. They risked their lives by driving around the city and rescued people from the most horrific rapes, torture and murder.

Interesting story but you might want to change the title of this thread because (a) there’s no such thing as a good nazi and (b) there’s nothing in the article to suggest that Rabe was a nazi. In fact, it seems highly unlikely that he was one as he moved to China in 1908, so calling this man, who you apparently respect, a nazi seems to be both incorrect and an insult to him.

He was a Nazi. He joined the party after Hitler came to power and became the head of the Nazi party in Nanjing. His diary was published in the US in 1998.

Oh, interesting, although according to one reader of the above book:

Are you referring to Iris Chang, the American writer who committed suicide not long ago?
She wrote a well received book on the massacre. However, I didn’t like the way she asserted that leading Japanese war criminals avoided prosecution because the US needed them after World War II, while failing to explain that the very same Cold War imperative did not prevent German war criminals from being tried.

But at least we got some good science and intel from the German thugs we did spare. German technology contributed a great deal to the US rocket program and to our development of jet aircraft. What did we get for letting some of the nastier Japanese war criminals off? Completely worthless chemical and biological weapons “science” is the first thing that comes to mind. We learned far less from Japanese war criminals than from German war criminals. Those fuckers should have hung or fried, or better yet, hung and fried.

Why don’t you tell that to the survivors and their descendents that owe their lives to this guy. What about Oscar Schindler? He was a nazi member too, even Spielberg made a film about him. What about Sophie Scholl and their friends who were executed for their roles in White Rose (a student organization dedicated to awakening fellow Germans to the immorality of the Hitler regime). These kids were members of the nazi youth league.
Even in post WW2 South Africa, quite a few German nazi helped the ANC against apartheid oppression. If you were referring to modern day nazi, hell I agree with you.

No, she was a white American born in the late 1800. Thanks for the Amazon link, her name is Minnie Vautrin.
