I wonder if they will sell the same over-priced crap here as they do in the UK?
Finally I can get some half-decent underwear! Nice sarnies, too.
Khh?
Kaoshiung, of course you wouldn’t know that by consulting the forumosa pinyin lexicon!
Too damn lazy. Why the extra ‘h’? Harbour? Guess I’d know that too if I checked the lexicon.
Nah, I was making fun of the way it comes out Gaoxiong in parentheses with the auto-pinyin correction feature here on the site. KHH is actually the international airport code for the city, I believe.
Only when you misspell it. Kaohsiung is the traditional spelling, and no pinyin is added. It’s only when people spell it with an “sh” instead of an “hs” that the pinyin kicks in.
Keks and socks and sarnies and really good TV dinners! Overpriced? Crap? Most certainly NOT! The panties I’m wearing right now are still doing well and are more than 10 years old. It’ll give me an excuse to take the new train, too.
I would just hope that they bring it to Taipei sometime soon.

I wonder if they will sell the same over-priced crap here as they do in the UK?[/quote]For a few weeks they will, just even more over-priced. Then they will switch over to over-priced Taiwanese crap.
M&S in Taiwan? Why? Just another English supermarket chain selling the same crap you get in Wellcome.
They certainly won’t be selling socks and keks and butterscotch biscuits and reasonably priced wine and champagne or affordable suits where you can buy the trousers separately and two pairs even or a wide range of easy and tasty TV dinners or emergency Instant Dinner Party kits or seven different kinds of spud or nice sandwiches. I can absolutely guarantee that. So what’s the point?

Yer just a bastard. Spoiling peoples’ dreams like that. Ought to be ashamed of yourself. The worst part is you’re probably right.

As for the clothes, I bought a pair of trousers and three shirts before I came out here five years ago. I can’t remember how much they were exactly, but the total was about sixty quid. The trousers and two of the shirts are still going strong. Can’t beat that.
Still, as others have pointed out, they probably won’t sell the decent stuff here, at least not for long.
I’m a big fan of M&S, especially the undies and food, but I entirely share Lord Lucan’s and others’ pessimism. The odds are it’ll just end up being another Tesco or Boots debacle.
But maybe, just maybe, they’ll bring in a British manager, he’ll become a Forumosan, and we’ll be able to persuade him to stock some of the good stuff specially for us.
Woo-hoo. Marks & Spencer is opening three stores: the one in Kaohsiung in May, followed by a pair in Taipei later this year.
Do you have any media sources for this? My wife doesn’t believe me.
Hopefully they will have the same selection of foodstuff that they do in the HK M&S. They stock crisps, nuts, sweets (wine gums, midget gems, liquorish allsorts, etc.), jams, sauces, curries, and some other canned foods.
I can’t help but pickup a suitcase full of wine gums on my way through HK, so it will save me lugging it all back. Now just need to find where to get some decent sausages.
Yes, but it’s not been posted yet.
You got it here first.
The wife says one of the M&S’s is going to open at the location of the California Fitness Center on Zhongxiao East Road.
I’m praying they’ll at least start by stocking a selection of their foods, to test the local market. If so, I’ll buy all the nuts I can carry (especially Brazils and hazelnuts), but I’m not very optimistic, and am already reconciled to the likelihood that they’ll sell only clothes.
