Jury duty in the US: What should I do?

Need help from fellow Americans in Taiwan. My parents in the States just received juror summons for me to appear in court for jury duty. In order to confirm that I’m no longer residing in the US, I need to produce proof, e.g., driver’s license, utility bill, property tax bill, vehicle registration, bearing my name and address in Taiwan. The problem is most of the documents I can come up with are in Chinese. Will that be a problem? or is there any way to get around this? Will the court recognize my ROC motorcycle license or my ARC, which is more than adaquate proof? But alas, the address is in Chinese only. How do I get out of this one? :help:

  1. Usually there’s a number on the summons. Call them yourself to explain the situation. That’s what I’ve done before in the past. I was in college (another city) at time so I was able to ditch out easy enough. Just had to mail a signed letter with the postmark from my current residence (city).

  2. Makes copies and send them the mandarin bills. Your name will at least be in english so that should solve that.

Call them at least though. Works out a lot easier though the phone call will be expensive. Make sure that nothing gets lost in the transfer of info. (Court to folks to you).

Good luck!

OK. I’m hoping the ARC will do. Looking at it, I see that my name is in English. That’s good. But it also shows Date of Expiry: 2003. The renewed date is actually stamped on reverse. I’ll fax it over and see if it works. Thanks.

Shouldn’t be a problem. I was excused from jury duty last year and it was my folks who called the courthouse to explein where I am.

If you have any trouble, you could go to AIT’s American Citizens Services section and ask for assistance. I would think they could help you out.

I agree with Tiggerman. Shouldn’t be a problem. My jury duty notice was sent to my tax guy back home who sent them a short note saying I’m out of the country. That was it.

Yes, it is quite easy to be excused from jury duty. Make sure that you do contact the court in a timely manner, though.

You might also write a short essay describing how you feel “burning at the stake” is the most appropriate punishment for many of the crimes committed in our modern society. At the least, such a punishment results in highly reduced rates of recidivism.

Just write and ask if you can do a “write-in” vote, and to save on postage, you’re enclosing your verdict of “guilty as charged.”

Thanks for all the helpful tips, guys. I’ve faxed over all the forms and am counting on the 'rents back home to get me out of this one.
