Yesterday, I need to go to the supper market. I asked the girl who I met on the street “any suppermaket near here?”. She replied “From Jilin Rd, turn right then walk about 5-10 mins will see a suppermaket name @#@$”. I assumed that suppermaket will has the word “suppermaket” outside, but I wrong…hehe. I have walked almost the Jilin rd but found nothing…
Finally, I goto the small maket near my room then buy something, when I get home, I found they don’t give me all things I have bought…
My first exprience in Taipei…
To those who just arrived (you’re gonna love it… I came home for Teacher’s College and am going right back in a couple weeks) I just have a question, since you’re fresh off the plane. What kind of VISA did you come with? I’d assume Visitors. Did they say anything to you about new laws which made it illegal to transfer it to a work permet?
The most I can gather is that it is a law (as “law-ish” as Taiwan things can get) but enforced differently from city to city. I had no problem doing this a couple of years ago, so I’m wondering if it wast just hoopla from the consulate.
Thanks. The culture shock isn’t going away anytime soon, just accept it. Turn off all expectations and let this new place be what it is. It’s messed at times, but there’s a reason why all these people pick up their lives and plant them in Taiwan for a lonnnnng time. Enjoy… I can’t wait to get back!

She might have been directing you to a “traditional market.” Some of these are very easy to walk right by if you don’t know where they are located.
As for being ripped-off…In my experience here that is very very rare.
If buying fruit/veggies/etc from the markets I usually see them throwing a little extra in just for the heck of it.
I watch my change very closely and have not been shorted yet (as far as I know). Honesty seems to be the prevailing attitude with the shops here.
Too much competition for somene to get a bad name as a rip-off.
