Hey,
I have just arrived in Taipei… I’m looking around for work in maybe Cram Schools or Kindter Gardens schools and was wondering if there is any help information out there?
I called to a few Cram schools but they said they had no need for a teacher right now. I’m 28 year old guy from the UK.

I arrived two weeks back from the UK… basically you need to hit the streets - find out where the main schools are, then systematically pound the streets of Taipei, they are often clustered together, so where there is a HESS or Kojen, there will probably be smaller schools…
You may end up having to go to a smaller city - Taipei is really expensive ala London… What you want is 20+ hours, which until the New Yr, you are unlikely to pick up…
I came to Kaohsiung and got a job within a week, NT$600 part time, adults and an IELTS job one night a week paying NT$700… although it would help if you have a CELTA if you’re thinking of adults… I still won’t be able to live on this wage unless I pick up more hours (prefectly possible) but with January coming I’m hopeful I get a full time either at my main school or pick something up elsewhere…
Oh and Kaohsiung is pretty saturated at the moment… there is a fair bit of sub work going but it’s no way to live really…

You might have a hard time seeing as you are not a native speaker though if you have a UK passport schools may not care.

He’s from the UK? The most native of speakers there is! 
Please. If he’s from the UK and has a degree are you seriously suggesting he doesn’t know when to capitalize words and how to spell kindergarten? Nor that kindergarten (however spelled) does not take “school” after it.
I don’t really care much either way. Lots of Russians teaching kindie these days I hear. Just saying the dude is not a native speaker. If he has a passport and a degree he can still legally work but if, as I suspect, he has an accent, he might find it difficult especially if doing cold calls.
Also he should know that the school whose name he cannot spell cannot legally hire foreigners.
But that’s the best part, working illegally and hoping not to get caught and deported. But when you are caught, complain that you didn’t know.
LIke they say back home, ignorance of the law is no excuse.
The new year you need to focus on is Chinese New Year not January 1st. There’s no more likely to be positions in January than there are now. Come February there may be more openings as the new semester starts.
I heard winter vacation this year (or actually next) is from 1/21 to 2/10.
So it’s better to be looking in February than January?
And, are most schools (including Cram) totally closed for the whole winter vacation?
the Cram schools do their own schedules. My mid-sized chain only takes the new year off (the week) and a different larger chain takes 2 weeks off. I think this is standard but I haven’t polled everyone.
My school also doesn’t take a summer break. 51 wks/yr, 6 days/wk. One of the few downsides to my otherwise good job.

Cram schools is your best bet…
I hope you brought with you enough money to last you 1-2 months.
If things don’t work out… go China. You’ll get one in 1 day.

What have you been doing for the past year?
It’s not impossible to get interviews over the phone, as Lily has shown us, but pounding the pavement is the most likely to find the openings.
Those clusters are usually around elementary schools.
I realize this is hit-or-miss, but there are often jobs available mid-semester as teachers break contracts. My first 2 part-time jobs were gotten that way, and I wasn’t even looking for work at that time. Language schools like TLI also hire year-round.

By the way, I signed my contract yesterday with that same school.
But yea, I wouldn’t recommend wasting time with applications from abroad if you’re not white, female, etc. You’d probably end up with a lot of Hess/Shane’s trying to recruit you and not much else.
Also, its Lee-Lee lol
Shane are a pretty good organisation for a first job.
