Just for fun

sjcma, you say ‘insider’, but i think ‘source’ is better. sources don’t want to be indentified and they usually tou4lu4 (leak) information. an insider wouldn’t necessarily not want to be identified.

i missed the post where you put up the other words : (

OK, here’s a few more from sjcma:

 • moist skin grease shi1 pi2 you2: butter?
 • black dragon hei1 long2 the leader of a gang?
 • plan count machinery ji4 suan4 j1 calculator
 • preserve his life wei2 ta1 min4 vitamin
 • essence of offspring jing1 zi5 semen? (whatever happened to the luan/egg?)
 • platform gulf tai2 wan1 (I cheated and asked my husband how to say gulf of mexico in chinese, sorry… : ) and doesn’t wan1 mean a flat area? come to think of it, i only know ‘gulf’ as referring to bodies of water and phrases like ’ a gulf in understanding’- like a gap

i greatly gan3xie4 your correcting my pinyin. so please do not feel that you will rang4 wo3 diu1lian2 if you continue to do so

there is a story in todays shi4jie4 re4? bao4 about a radio station in nyc making fun of chinese in a very lewd way on the air. i will cull that article for my next entry in this game.

here is a phrase from that article: stop duty, stop money, another time communicate know

They may leak info, they may not. They may want to be identified, they may not. I don’t believe the term is more specific than that. Any specificity in meaning will necessarily have to come from context.
- moist skin grease shi1 pi2 you2: butter?
Cold…
- black dragon hei1 long2 the leader of a gang?
I thought this one was prrrty easy. Think drink.
- plan count machinery ji4 suan4 j1 calculator
Yessirree bob. It can also mean a computer, of course.
- preserve his life wei2 ta1 min4 vitamin
Another one correct.
- essence of offspring jing1 zi5 semen? (whatever happened to the luan/egg?)
You’re on a roll.
- platform gulf tai2 wan1 (I cheated and asked my husband how to say gulf of mexico in Chinese, sorry… : ) and doesn’t wan1 mean a flat area? come to think of it, i only know ‘gulf’ as referring to bodies of water and phrases like ’ a gulf in understanding’- like a gap
Wan1 means bay or gulf. Think wan1 彎 as in curved, but with the water radical on the side 灣, it means a body of water that follows a curved shore, such as a bay.

shi1pi2you2- some sort of moisturizer?
black dragon- if it’s the name of an alcoholic drink, i wouldn’t know since i never drink alcoholic drinks.

and i shall repost my submission:

Mmmm…donuts.

 • moist skin grease = run4fu1gao1 潤膚膏 = lotion/moisturizer
 • black dragon = wu1long2 烏龍 = oolong tea

As far as the shi4jie4 ri4 bao4 phrase goes, I don’t think “money” is a correct literal translation. Rather, you can use salary, pay, or renumeration.

here is a phrase from that article: stop duty, stop pay, another time communicate know

and the answer is: ting2 stop /zhi2 duty/, ting2 stop /xin1 pay,/ ling4 another /hou4 time/ communicate tong1/ zhi1 know: suspended without pay until (pending) further notice

now i must search for a new phrase…

a new word: big discuss discuss ?
pledge country/pledge friend ?
struggle struggle person ?
regard scope?

If you’re really interested in this type of game, I just stumbled across a game on a variety show on TV that you might be interested in watching. The show is 綜藝大乃霸 on 華視 (channel 12). The game is called “瞎拼ABC…” Players describe Chinese words in English to make their partner guess the Chinese. I’m not sure if this is a regular segment on the show.

i don’t live in taiwan, so i can’t watch that, unless it’s on the internet. i lost the answers for my challenge words- they are too new for me to remember : ( if you guys don’t answer i lose my positive feedback /. ( so thanks lots /. ( /. ( oh, what the heck- life’s too short to be /. (

i shall again take up the yoke!!!

 1. winter sleep:
 2. peaceful sleep medicine:
 3. lose sleep sickness:
 4. urge sleep:

Also, which is correct, or which sounds better if both are technically correct:

shui4mian2 (sleep) shi4 (is) hen3 (very) zhong4yao4 de (important)

or

shui4jiao4 (sleep/sleeping) shi4 hen3 zhong4yao4 de.

which both mean (i think) ‘Sleep is important’

Thank you in advance for your big bang1mang2

PS I need a conscientious student emoticon-thxxxxxxxxxxx

I would like to have contribution to this thread.

Well, in Taiwan, now sleeping disorder is a big problem for most people.

We say shui4 main2 shi1 tiao2 睡眠失調 to indicate sleeping disorder.

The business to treat sleeping disorder is thriving.

The main2 should be mian2.

thank you kate!
insomnia: shui4 mian2 shi1 tiao2: sleep lose harmony

my perscription is: no caffeine except in the morning. get some sunshine everyday-preferably at dawn/dusk. do something relaxing in the hours before sleep. cry when overwhelmed. do not take sleeping pills.

My contributions, they shouldn’t be too difficult:

Do you mean…孩話 - hai2hua4 - child speech? I think you may have something else in mind…

放屁 - fang4pi4 - fart (or to talk nonsense)

If you thought the ‘something else’ was 童話 (tong2hua4 - fairytale), you were right!

That’s actually a better one than the one I had in mind! I was thinking of 出氣 (chu1qi4 - to vent one’s anger). I have another, related one:

gas eye

Try also:

large appearance

And, one more, for extra credit:

common China eternal path

Damn! Why didn’t I think of that? I’m reading fairytales in Chinese at the moment… :frowning:
