Karaoke or KTV with modern Rock or even Metal songs?

Lots of threads about KTV, and even a few about the probably biggest question for most: English songs. But how about us Rock / Metal lovers? I know no standard KTVs (Cashbox, Holiday KTV, …) that have much to offer in this category.

So how about those small bars or whatever other places you know, which just have a screen and some microphones in some corner, and have modern Rock or Metal music and Lyrics in some kind, so you can easily join in singing? Please report any places you know :bow:

I know a few places exist, else I wouldn’t dare asking… So here are the ones I know, which are pretty low level though, and I only very seldom frequent them. I wonder if anyone knows any better places.

MayBe Pub

Small, dark pub, walkable from MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing, food is so-so. They have a kind of home made-made Karaoke corner… a video projector and a DJ booth from which you can ask for songs. Only text is projected, but good enough for my purposes. The reason to go there for me is they even have some German songs, from very hard Rammstein to pretty soft Nena (99 red balloons). Problems with the Umlaute, though.

Sense Pub / 塵世PUB

NóngĀn Street 35之1號, near Linsen Nort Road. They had some more standard type of KTV system, a Korean one if I recall correctly. Some strange snowboarding etc. videos in the background, but lots of Metal to chose from: Metallica, Pantera, stuff like that. Not too bad at all for singing, but unfortunately a pretty seedy place (no idea if those two bar girls were for rent, the chubbier one sure dressed like that).

I have found the average Taipei karaoke bar has a complete set of all the greatest Western hits spanning the incredible range of the mid-60s right through to the late-80s. Their collection of genres is equally impressive, covering everything from soft pop right through to not so soft pop, and even a little light rock at the fringe (excluding hard rock, metal, hiphop, rap, soul, folk, country, funk, jazz, and anything else you can think of).

It’s like a teenage cassette collection from the early 90s; highly eclectic within extremely narrow spectra of chronology and genre.

Agreed. And they usually have the hard rock band Bon Jovi to satisfy hard/heavy rock fans.

Well if looking for “metal songs” I highly doubt that anybody could be satisfied with Bon Jovi and Born to Be Wild.

I was actually surprised last time I was at the big Holiday KTV in Hsimenting with the ample variety of updated songs in English. To my despair, my KTV staples of CCR’s Cottonfields and Proud Mary were missing! :astonished: :frowning: One of my companions chose Blondie’s Call Me. Waaay too high too fast for me. They also had Rick James Superfreak. :astonished: and other not-your-run-of-the-mill, unexpected choices. lady gaga’s, 90’s boy bands… Interesting, indeed.

Aren’t lady GAGA and 90’s boy bands standard for most KTVs?

Anyway, I found the name again of the second KTV and updated it above. So Metal and other modern Rock IS possible in KTVs in Taipei, I am just looking for additional options that maybe (no pun intended) are a bit nicer places :slight_smile:

Well, Holiday is nice-ish, at least has a buffet.

Any significant amount of modern Rock or Metal there? I am sure I have been there and wasn’t impressed… maybe I should double check :wink:

No point in checking. They don’t have metal or rock in any abundance.
Unless you consider Three doors down and Guns and Roses metal.

Haha thanks. No thats not really Metal, but yes, this was the closest to “modern” Rock music that I have seen in mainstream KTVs… No comparison to singing Metallica or Rammstein, though :wink:

Well, at least finally someone admits that such places exist! Would you mind sharing your favourite songs, drinks, foods etc. there? I didn’t do extensive testing, so maybe if you have some hints my personal rating for that place would get higher :slight_smile: So far I only had gold medal beer, and some rather bland food… which is why I didn’t frequent it too often…

The owners (or staff) seemed very nice though, and the place itself looks nice (dark) I think.

They have stuff like the Kings of Leon and Coldplay. I seem to recall some Foo Fighters, Elvis Costello, Clash and INXS. And I think most of the tracks have some vocals on them, so everyone sounds good. I’ve only ever hit it later in the night, so Tai Pi and shots was about all I’ve ever had there. Good times!

This is the reason why I don’t go to KTV’s, they ONLY play something that’s popular. I would love to sing some angry German metal (like Rammstein) and practice my German at the same time…
