Go with the FBI’s history of undercover and assets doing a bit more than reporting the happenings of purported baddies. There are way too many fingers in some of these pies. Be nice to know who’s who.
While I agree that the FBI has plenty of bad shit that it’s doing, the general public knowing who’s an undercover anything fully defeats the purpose of the FBI. Releasing information about orders given or intel gathered on civilians that “had not done anything wrong” is reasonable, as people deserve to know they’re being watched when they’re pretty sure there’s no reason to be. But knowing the identities of informants? Defeats the purpose of informants.
The House Judiciary Committee wants to know. I kind of think this is what checks and balances is all about. I don’t personally need to know who the snitches are, but those elected officials? Yeah, they should know. That’s how it’s supposed to work, isn’t it?
I mean, sure. I’d like to know all sorts of stuff. But I kind of understand a FBI boss reminding agents that confidential informant should be kept, you know, confidential. That’s kind of the deal.

Although the newly declassified document attempts to suggest that the FBI had actionable intelligence to suspect Trump of being a Russian agent, McCabe’s subsequent comments indicate that there was no such evidence on offer. Instead, McCabe has said his counterintelligence probe of Trump was primarily motivated by the president’s firing of Comey. In a February 2019 interview with CBS News, McCabe explained his thinking as follows: “[T]he idea is, if the president committed obstruction of justice, fired the director of the of the FBI to negatively impact or to shut down our investigation of Russia’s malign activity and possibly in support of his campaign, as a counter intelligence investigator you have to ask yourself, ‘Why would a president of the United States do that?’ So all those same sorts of facts cause us to wonder is there an inappropriate relationship, a connection between this president and our most fearsome enemy, the government of Russia.”
McCabe therefore had no evidence that Trump had a “connection” to Russia, and in fact could only “wonder” if there was one.
