Kiribati is holding presidential elections today in what has been termed as a battle between China and Taiwan for a diplomatic ally. Anyone has any news on the outcome of the election or its progress so far? Can’t seem to find anything online. Maybe there is a Kiribatian out there in Forumosa who could update us? Thank you in advance.

Meanwhile in Kiribati, the current government is seeking to pass what might be thought of as an unusual law.

Yes it’s unusual, as they have realized many of the other states and forms of government they deal with all the time (Kanaky / New Caledonia; Mā’ohi Nui / French Polynesia; American Samoa; Guahan / Guam; etc) do not represent themselves at the United Nations. So the “law” creates carve outs for such cases. It looks like it’s just targeting Taiwan, full stop.
