Large Tax Bill Question!

Hi all,

I’m sorry if this kind of question has been answered but I can’t find anything that answers my exact question. I’ve had a post at a university here for the last year and upon finishing my paperwork to leave and complete the position, I found out I owed an enormous amount of taxes leaving me quite shocked. Putting aside the question of my ignorance of this policy, my understanding is that since I have been traveling that is the reason. I am leaving the country on August 15 and have this huge bill to pay.

I am wondering if it is possible to get some back? Or even avoid all together?

If I was married in March to a Taiwanese, would that effect his policy of paying taxes if you haven’t resided in Taiwan for more than 183 days straight?

Thanks very much, any guidance or help would be greatly appreciated!
