I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the administrators for your wisdom in balancing freedom of speech with the responsibility of maintaining the credibility and reputation of our community.
A rogue post, along the lines of “有些人” was appropriately removed in order to preserve the dignity and privacy of certain involved contributors, whether or not they consented to this censorship. The contents of the deleted thread contained a link to a popular Taiwanese tabloid, the contents of which would (by means of online search engines) lead curious readers to Forumosa as the first result. Details contained within the thread could have posed a threat to the individuals involved personally as well as the Forumosan community. While some information is still available though the “cache” function of Google, I believe that the timely response of our moderators saved embarrassment and unnecessary scrutiny for our members (particularly those who were victimized by the events depicted).
Members of the community notice and appreciate the tact and appropriate intervention of moderators, particularly where self-constrain is inhibited.
Just to be clear that you are giving kudos to jimipresley and housecat, not 914, even though thethread was in my forum. I do not deserve the kudos given, i was actually already asleep when it all went down. If i had been up and was available to moderate, i would not have flamed thethread. Some pruning ofcolorful language, maybe. Im very liberal and neutral in my forums, but as most inthe know canunderstand, im a bit biased on this one.
That said, thank you to jp and hc for patrollong the forums when most mods are asleep. I can see why they wanted to flame the whole thread, even though i can not agree with it.

Sort of, but not exactly. He did acknowledge that a link to a Chinese news article corresponded to his online identity (perhaps sensing that his outing was inevitable), but his true name was then posted repeatedly on this forum and all kinds of private, real-life allegations not mentioned in that article were posted publicly, and he was quickly stomped on by the angry mob. Maybe he coyly introduced himself, but the crowd tore off all his clothes and beat him to a bloody pulp.
I don’t believe he willingly signed up for that public display of his private dirt.

I’m sorry, but how is him saying “that person in the news article is me”, “not exactly” him outing himself? And once he outed himself, was it not fair to use his name? I think it was. After all, the posters who used his name were referring to the guy in the news article, where his name is stated.

I agree with Omni. That thread should have been allowed to continue. If anything it provided the poster in question a chance to post his youtube video and his side of the story (I have to say I rather like both of the people involved but only met either of them very, very briefly), as well as the entertaining posts against him.
Forumosa is the mob/gladiator arena. If it is going to try and compete on being the site of moral righteousness (however unevenly applied), it will lose to the other site. Let it be the site of free speech and non-Stasi tactics.
Stu you’re right that he did out himself, and up to a point was participating willingly in the discussion, which is why it continued as long as it did. It reached a point last night though where I felt his rights as a site member needed to be protected.

OK, at the least there should be a thread about the actions of this foreigner limited only to the news story. Everyone else has the right (?) to be ripped a new asshole by the court of flob, so why should that poster be protected differently? Pretty much anyone who makes the news is fair game on this site, so why make an exception. His actions that day in the car, his passport shenanigans, the scorned Taiwanese love interest… we should be able to at least talk about that stuff and the mods can set out their stall and prune out the rest. You seem to prune the shit out of pointless stuff, so why not trim all the meat away from this issue and just leave the fat behind…?
IF you wish to moderate this site (yes, it is a choice you make, not a hand you have forced upon you) then I suggest that you try to adopt an approach which is fair and balanced, rather than one that is taken case by case. The autonomy the mods have here simply fails in cases like this one, where it requires a lock and a hide until a consensus is reached.

Actually, sorry to be a spoilsport, but since I have been called foul over putting this kind of stories about furriners in the news/legal trouble before, I think we really need to set up guidelines/limits, especially regarding ongoing investigations and current legal affairs. This is especially relevant since most of us agree that getting a “fair” depiction in local news and hence in legal speheres is, ehem, debatable, plus the ever present fact that even though we can imagine ourselves talking to each other in a semi private media, the reality is we are standing naked screaming in the middle of the town plaza while our words are recorded for posterity. And hence lies the dilemma. It is not all fun and games.

Yeah. In retrospect, it was likely me who overstepped the bounds of the prevailing culture on this forum by giving such free reign to my pretensions. Nobody really knows me (sorry superking, this is the only handle I have ever used) and, as a result, my opinion and feedback are likely not productive in the context of any ongoing debate over personal matters of which I have no first hand knowledge.
What prompted my initial concern (posted and deleted, along with the entire thread, during the wee hours of the morning) was my discovery that googling the name of the culprit in this case led to Forumosa as the first search result.This linked to content (now possibly cached) which very publicly exposed personal information about certain posters, potentially leading to embarrassment for those involved, and offering a veritable goldmine of quotes which the filth-mongering, anti-foreigner, bottom-scraping Taiwanese media could have used to the detriment of many.
The disappearance of the thread allayed my fears of the potential harm this “airing of dirty laundry” might have caused, thus prompting my late night kudos. I stand by my belief that it was the right decision and that such temperance should be encouraged, for the sake of this community.
