A game of chess, is like a sword fight. You must think first, before you move.
I want to learn chess. I think it would suit me.
Any suggestions on how to start?

You are too bloody old to start learning it now.
I was a local chess champion in my younger days, before the booze got to the brain cells. I decided to retire while I at the top (that was when I was 12). I’ve hardly played a game in the decades since. Ah, the golden days of yesteryear.

No No. I quite disagree. I would slaughter anyone at backgammon, and I learnt that at 24.
I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now. (B.Dylan, My back pages.)
I think I have some books on chess at home which you could have for free. Drop me a PM to remind me to look for them.
If you come back to Taiwan you can join the chess club and miltownkid will kick your ass.

I’m in London old bean.
Can I have the names of the books, then I will try the library.
I would hope MTK would kick my arse at it.
I can play chess. I can’t be arsed, though.

Oh my God, do you like Down in the groove too? That took me a few minutes to place the line from, Silvio. Ugliest girl in the world is such a cool song.
I can play chess. I can’t be arsed, though.
When I saw you’d posted in this thread I had a little bet to myself. I thought you’d either have written “chess is easy” or “chess is boring”. I wasn’t far off, was I?
Personally, I find chess both difficult and boring. Boring because difficult. I’m sure it’s nice for people who have the patience, though.
Tom, I have nothing useful to add to this thread except to say “go for it”. You probably won’t end up as one of those Russian grandmaster types but you might have fun playing chess anyway.

Well, if you go to a library you can probably find good books on this w/o the names of the ones I have; I’ve not read and can’t recommend them, but I do remember one was by Nigel Short.

It’s a fair assumption to say that I won’t end up as a Russian.
DB, thanks. I also recall Nigel Short was beaten by Kasparov live in TV when I was younger.
You can make it more fun by using a clock to limit turn times, or you can buy “Nightmare Chess”, which is a card game played alongside the chess game; the cards change the rules of the chess game as you go, which makes things quite lively! Highly recommended.

I like Uno.
If I were going to take chess seriously, I’d go the whole hog and buy a big fur hat and a bottle of vodka.

Where did I say ‘easier’?
Joe, yes. You have finally grasped my profound and complex nature. I also know what you will post on any given subject. It doesn’t make me think less of you.
Buttercup, it wasn’t supposed to be a deep analysis or anything, and certainly not intended to be belittling. It was just a kind of random thought that I posted. Maybe it would have been better left unposted.
I also know what you will post on any given subject.
Trouble is, I do too! People used to talk about a Fred Smith-bot; well, I feel like a joesaxbot sometimes.
I have a feeling this is going to end up in your favourite forum.
Some Russian masters once told me that they learned chess by playing the endgame and solving chess tactics problems. I couldn’t bother with the endgame stuff… I learned chess through chess openings books instead. There’s a reason why the Russians dominate chess.
I’d suggest learning the basic rules of chess (piece movement etc) and then go read some chess books about chess tournaments or biographies of chess masters that are annotated. Those will make the chess games and chess concepts come alive. Finally, play a lot.
Enjoy! Chess is an awesome game.

I knew you were going to write that. Don’t be boring. Break free!
TomHill,
I don’t think you should start playing chess. Chess players are hot. In no time you’ll have dozens of groupies and it will be difficult to stay faithful to MrsHill, which you will later regret. Don’t do it!

I thought you were into guys who throw big rocks.
