Learning Chinese in China?

Anyone know the ropes re learning Chinese in China? A nice mellow city, cheap tution, no frills, that sort of thing. Any good websites (like this one) where I can find such info. Many thanks if you can help.

This place has good reviews: Dalian Maritime University

I checked out the website and it looks promising. Juba, you say the reviews are good. Do you know people who have gone to this university?

Zeijiang University in Hangzhou. Students seem to be mostly from Japan and Korea, but many Europeans and some Ozzies. As for mellow, you can hang out at the reggae pub (some African students attending Zeijiang University but not for Chinese study).

West Lake may be a bit over-rated, but still beats most other Chinese cities easily. BTW, no scooters in Hangzhou, students get around on bikes or buses (more modern than the ones in Taiwan). I didn’t attend the program. Just met some students there (for the Chinese Language/Culture program) and hung out with them for a few days. Good luck.

Xiamen University, the city has a nice little European touch, at least 5 years ago there were no American students, so no possiblities to just hang out with English speaking ppl. A lot of Japanese and some Europeans where there at that time. Locals are nice and not as backwarded as in other places, it’s the only place I really felt comfi in mainland…=)
