Leaving Taiwan - 183 Days

Hi everyone,

I have a question! I am starting my position in Taiwan as a teacher on July 1st. I plan to arrive around June 22nd (8 days before July 1st).

Would I be able to take a 5 day vacation to Japan at the end of August, without forfeiting my tax refund? Or, are the days cutting it too close?

Please let me know,

Thanks

AFAIK, as long as you are in Taiwan for 183 days of the tax year (Jan 1~Dec. 31), you will be taxed at the normal rate as opposed to the 18 or 20% “foreigner” rate. Therefore, you would get a refund of the excess amount withheld (withheld at the “foreigner” rate) when you file your taxes. So, simply (but accurately!) count the number of days on a calendar.

When you count, exclude the date of arrival and include the date of departure

What tando said. If you’re cutting it fine, this is important!
