And behind closed doors, this is done a bunch.
Wash your vegetables well.

Wash your vegetables well.
I wash my vegetables very well, thank you.
It would want to be a pretty gross floor indeed to be dirtier than the dirt that the plants were grown in. ![]()
Oh it is. I suggest going there and looking at the floor. ![]()
Get a scooter and get out to the mountains and countryside.
Learn some Chinese.
Eat at local restaurants. They’re cheap and tasty.
For the best prices, use booking dot com for hotels if your Chinese sucks; otherwise, have a Chinese-speaking friend call the hotel and book for you.
Don’t be afraid of Love Motels and always ask for the Jacuzzi.
If you love dogs and want a new best friend, go to the local shelter and get a 台灣土狗 or “米克斯.” They are usually highly intelligent and healthy.
Go to hot springs when the weather cools down.
Avoid riverbeds or streams during heavy rain. (My favorite hot spring town got washed away during the October 2023 typhoon.)
In the mountains, don’t go off trail if you’re not at least 95% sure of where you’re going. It can be very steep and the soil can be quite unstable.
I’m kind of afraid they don’t wipe them down as thoroughly as they should. ![]()
When crossing roads, always look both ways. Doesn’t matter which side of the road the traffic is on. LOOK BOTH WAYS!
And don’t be a phone zombie. Keep your eyes and ears open for traffic from all sides! You can listen to the Carpenters from your sofa, not a hospital gurney!
Look both ways before crossing the sidewalk too…
Umbrellas aren’t only for the rain. They’re great for UV protection, too.
Speak of the devil: this happened to us this morning. Two women on bikes came around a corner - on the footpath - and crashed into us. One of them hit my five year old: there was a thud and it knocked him flat on his back. Thankfully no injury. The woman is standing there on her bike saying duibuqi dubuqi. I am like yes this is the buqi, the not ride bicycle footpath. don’t say ‘buqi’ just actually don’t ride your bike on the footpath! She repeats dubuqi dubuqi and then they both continue on cycling down the footpath.
This is our third collision. One motorbike, two bikes, and counting. The only saving grace is that they don’t go very fast so its really just an annoyance. I got a fright today though.
This reminds me that I am still suffering from my injuries from ten months ago, when I was hit by a scooter and left with a shattered shoulder that required surgery and the other shoulder dislocated, and I am still not fully recovered.
Holy crap, that sounds awful, really sorry to hear that!
Welcome to Taiwan, the “pedestrians hell”.
When I was doing military I checked into a love motel during leave, they would call you once you check in and ask if you want any special company…
One other problem with using mobile internet as hot spot at home rather than wired cable or fiber, is it would only work if your building has good reception. Some buildings have basically none.
Also prepaid is very expensive compared to contract, even better if you can get combo deals.
The prepaid deal I am using works out at 400 NT a month or something for unlimited internet. It works out cheap like that if you buy the longest available top up: 180 days.
When I had a contract it cost twice that per month.
Any idea which provider? Taiwan mobile, far east tone, and cht all cost 1000 a month for unlimited prepaid internet. With contract this goes down to 600. If you have 5g service they cost more.
Its 大哥大 the 180 day unlimited internet and limited calls. I make very few calls so the token amount you get for free is enough for me.
I’m paying 1000 a month, but this is a 5g plan so they’re more. I had no idea they had a prepaid plan that works out to 400 a month.
Yeah, but that’s also including the quite expensive premium for your “free” phone — quite important to mention that. I don’t think it’s such a good deal, and it’s way more than I pay even on prepaid with no commitment (probably NT$200–300 per month, though not with unlimited internet of course).
