Life on Penghu - Advice?

That sounds awesome! Enjoy it there

Dear god where did those foreigners come from? Three years ago I knew the only FET on Penghu and she was going between three schools. The year before that it was one guy trying to go between four schools. They “didn’t have the money” to hire more foreign teachers. Or did Fulbright come in with Taiwan and American tax dollars and throw 30 big noses with no background in education at Penghu’s public schools too?

There are 5-7 FETs on the island and 9-11 Fulbright teachers. So 15-20 total. They are trying to get a foreign teacher in as many schools as possible. Even Qimei (outer island) has an FET now and they are working on getting Wang An (another outer island) an FET. The Bilingual by 2030 program has had a big impact on getting foreign teachers here.

From what I’ve seen, the Fulbright teachers are very helpful and positive and assist the local English teachers during instruction quite well.

Glad to hear things worked out. Do you have any recommendations for food over there? Going to visit next week.

Wow, I’m shocked but excited.

Oh man, I went to Wang An in 2020 and loved it. It would be a very cool place to semi-retire, but even though it’s a “paradise” I think I would still feel too isolated. I suppose it would be easy enough to take weekend trips to Penghu proper.

Hmmm…

Are there not any where you live? (in Southern Taiwan we have them)

funny cartoon!, but Penghu is more like a resort town, than a country backwater. And always changing for the better mostly.

I know they’re not really a thing in Greater Taipei.

I am always amused when I see them in Taoyuan.

Great photos ! Everyone looks so happy. Magong/Penghu is great place! Want go back soon as well to Qimei Township(a place I have never visited)

So these are my top 20 food/drink spots, what surprised me when I moved here is just how much there is to do and explore. There are 100s of restaurants and many things to do in regards to sight seeing and having fun. For things to do just use trip advisor haha. If you are staying downtown you will have plenty to do . Hit me up one day you are here and we can have a beer or coffee or something. Or don’t. LOL. Enjoy Penghu!

Have you been to Addict Restaurant (癮餐廳)? I always looked forward to eating there whenever I visited Penghu. Excellent eggs benedicts and other western style dishes.

They used to be located on Minsheng Rd. but they went out of business a year or two ago. Or so I thought…

I just checked and they are in business again at a new location on Lin Sen Rd. Now I’m really excited to visit again and see if it’s still as good as I remember.

EDIT: Whoops, I see it now on your list!

You just gave me a list of places to try next week. Thanks!

Is there anything good near Shanshui beach?

For drinks and snacks there is a western owned bar called The Beach Break right near Shanshui beach. I know they have been renovating and plan to reopen soon, they may or may not be open during your stay.

There is a cool open spaced BBQ/Beer spot in Shanshui I can recommend. Get the oysters but bring your own lemon and hot sauce LOL

Hello!

Thanks for the great recs! Do you know if the pool hall is still open? If so, where is it? We are here for the week to enjoy the beach and would love to get a game of pool in!

The pool hall shut down a few years ago. If you go to the Four Points hotel, you can pay 300nt for swimming pool access. The swimming pool area has a few pool tables, video games, etc…Also has a sauna and hot tub.
