Well, a lack of everything is not very tempting, and I’m starting to think that the lack of sidewalk is an issue if everyone is talking about it.
Apartment in that range in Tianmu seem to all be old (i.e. not modern in layout, little natural light, small/ugly bathroom, small/ugly kitchen, etc…) and I prefer no furniture than ugly furniture

Regarding Danshui, I’m at Hongshulin which is the station before Danshui. All the benefits of Danshui without any of the crowds and hassles. Mostly new places too - we pay a little over $NT21K for 37 ping with 15 foot ceilings, river views, always a cool breeze (generally no need for AC even on the hottest days), pool, gym etc.
The only thing I’d be worried about is the commute from Hongshulin to European school. It will be more than half an hour -10 minute walk to MRT as minimum, 20 minutes MRT ride, then walk to European school. Or worse: school bus all the way.
I also found Hongshulin a bit “tighter”, that means, the buildings are packed closer together, unless you go up the hills, and that would start taking points off the convenience factor. It must be pointed out too that there is a single road up to Danshui, and it gets pretty congested, so this is a factor for anyone driving to/from work/school/etc.
Furthermore, the reason I suggested a bit further down the line was because of budget: the main attraction of Danshui and Hongshulin is that you can get cheaper places. There is a reason for that. The OP has no such budget constraints, but time constraints. And he’s looking for light, which would be more available in Tianmu -dryer microclimate- than Hongshulin or -gulp!- Danshui.
Peizong, trust me, I work with the diplomatic corps here, many live in the areas I pointed out in Tianmu, very happily. If it is good for them, it is OK. Ah, the creperie, the taco place, a proper butcher, delicatessen… you’ll be better off there.

I believe the more common expression is 肉包鐵 and 鐵包肉, or flesh wrapped around metal and metal wrapped around flesh. Personally, I prefer flesh wrapped around flesh.
