Foreigners come to Taiwan for all sorts of reasons. Many of them end up staying because there is something about it that they like. Still, so many of them constantly complain and think that Taiwan should be more like wherever the hell they came from. :loco:
If you want to be in a place exactly like the place you came from buy a plane ticket and piss off, it’s simple really.
(]Not where I come from.
Why should Taiwan be any different
there are comments like this all over the place, in both the real and virtual worlds.
And another thing that I want to know, how long until this is floundered?
The things that people mostly complain about are things that make life unnecessarily inconvenient for no good reason and things that make life unnecessarily dangerous when the danger can be easily avoided.
Hell, I don’t want Taiwan to be like where I came from. But I would like nonsensical inconveniences and unnecessary dangers minimised.
Taiwan is my home country and yet I complain about it everyday. But I supppose it makes a difference because I’m a Taiwanese. (?) People can’t turn to me and say, why don’t you go home because this is my home.
Perhaps some see the mis-used or un-used potential that exists here on Taiwan?
Just an example - Tainan has a magnificent harbor that would be a cities dream most anywhere else on this planet. And here, its looked at with almost complete indifference.
I think this sort of attitude is reflected many times over.
That tends to inspire a lot of my bitching about Taiwan to the wife.
the only time I wish Taiwan was like home is when I go shopping. I wish I could go to ONE grocery store and get all the things I like to cook with, and go shopping at Target, extra. Get the sunday paper with all the sales ads in it, etc. BUt then if I could get all that here, I should have just moved to Chinatown in Chicago…
I complain about home when I’m back home all the time. Most people do. Why should my attitude be any different just because I’m in a foreign country? There’s always tons of stupid stuff in this world to complain about.
at home people do not spit in the staircase in front of my door. Here, it is a spit museum, as it is never cleaned. 5000 years and still no control of body fluids.
Yes Woodchild, probably I go home for that. Way to dirty and makes me sick every morning (“it’s moving! It comes closer to me … aaaaarg, it’s in my shoes out there…”).
Green greetings,
BlopBob
EDIT: why I still stay? Beefnoodle soup! Delicious!
Again this “if you complain, go home” statement, yearn… [French? newbie starting the thread]
Why on earth would an intelligent, and possibly politically aware, Western-educated person instantly turn off his critical faculties because he lands in Taiwan?
Gweilos whinged and moaned for years about the way Hong Kong was run and a lot of the time the government listened and made improvements.
Tee hee. You think foreigners complain a lot? You should hear Taiwanese who have lived abroad and come back complain! Wow!
I used to know loads of foreign students when I was at university and I got to hear a lot of their complaints, many of which were perfectly reasonable. In a society where criticism is accepted as a method of reform, it is very effective.
I suggest that people who are angered by other people’s criticism or comparisons retreat into a small cave and roll a stone over the door to keep out the unharmonious sounds. Last place you want to be is on the internet. Isn’t complaining (and porn) what the internet’s for?

To tell the truth, I also miss Target stores. Back home in so cali I had 3 Tar-Jaay store within 10 minutes drive. I probably did 80% of my shopping for clothes, household items and even some food at the Target stores back home. And Target Online will not ship here either.
Dat sucks.
